About the role

UCLA Extension is the open-access, self-supporting continuing-education division of UCLA. The Department of Entertainment Studies offers certificate programs and courses—including post-baccalaureate credit-bearing (400-level), continuing-education (CEU) credit, and non-credit general-interest courses—across disciplines such as Business and Management of Entertainment, Film & TV Development, Producing, Directing, Acting, Cinematography, Post-Production, Film Scoring, Independent Music Production, and Music Business. Instructors are highly qualified practitioners who bring current professional experience into the classroom.

This search seeks qualified applicants to teach in Film Scoring and/or Music Production. Classes may be offered online (asynchronous), in person, or live online via Zoom. In-person and live-online classes meet once a week for 11 weeks, typically evenings from 7–10 pm. All courses use the Canvas platform for distributing materials, syllabi, assignments, and feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Develop or update course syllabus to meet campus approval requirements, in consultation with the UCLA Extension Portfolio Director and Portfolio Manager.
  • Use subject-matter expertise to design interactive and motivational classroom activities, leverage guest speakers, and reinforce student learning.
  • Update materials periodically and monitor course evaluations to make curriculum adjustments and improvements.
  • Utilize Canvas as the course-support platform for in-person, remote, online, and hybrid courses.
  • Post final student grades to the transcript system within two weeks of the course end date.
  • Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner.
  • Communicate promptly with the Portfolio Director and Portfolio Staff.
  • Complete required administrative tasks, including new-hire paperwork, quarterly syllabus updates, bio and photo submission, textbook orders, and classroom needs.
  • Participate in required orientations and instructor training programs.
  • Assist in occasional program activities such as open houses, guest lecturing, and community events.
  • Employ culturally sensitive teaching methodologies inclusive of both domestic and international student populations.
  • Maintain a record of final grades for up to 13 months following the last class session.

Requirements

  • Professional experience in Film Scoring, Music Production, or a related area (e.g., instrumentation, orchestration, recording, mixing and editing techniques for film composers, composing for video games/animation, songwriting, A&R, music management, music publishing, music licensing, entertainment law as it pertains to the music industry, music marketing, tour management, or music supervision).
  • Current or recent professional experience in the field to help students navigate the evolving landscape of the film scoring and/or music industry.
  • Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity.
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence.
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn instructional technology and online teaching tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College-level and/or continuing-education teaching experience.
  • Experience designing curriculum and measuring student performance.

Pay

$3,000 per course, per quarter. Courses are typically 33 hours in length.

Schedule

Classes are offered on a quarterly contract basis. In-person and live-online classes meet once a week for 11 weeks, typically evenings from 7–10 pm. Online classes are asynchronous and deadline-driven.
