About the Role

RMS is looking for a Field Service Welder to perform a variety of welding and fabrication operations on rotating equipment components and assemblies to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality standards. This position supports production activities through MIG, TIG, and stick welding of carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy materials used in steam turbines, axial compressors, hot gas expanders, power turbines, screw compressors, and related turbomachinery. The Welder promotes safe work practices, proper use of equipment, and adherence to quality requirements in all phases of fabrication, repair, and assembly while supporting production demands during first shift operations.

Responsibilities

  • Able to pass WPQ on in-house procedures and maintain continuity log for audit purposes.
  • Fabricate centrifugal compressor impellers via “slot” and traditional fillet welding.
  • Perform visual inspection of welds and apply grinding/upgrade techniques.
  • Set up positioners, thermal blankets, induction heaters, and other pre-work equipment.
  • Track usage of consumables including burrs, torch tips, temp sticks, etc.
  • Repair stationary and rotating components in turbomachinery such as compressors, turbines, and pumps.
  • Perform manual GTAW welding; familiarity with automatic welding is a plus.
  • Operate in-house automatic SAW machine.
  • Inspect and record measurements of component parts to customer, OEM, and industry standards using precision measuring instruments.
  • Notify Quality and Production Leadership of non-conformities and drive for resolution.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and adhere to safety policies and procedures.
  • Keep a clean and organized work area.
  • Additional projects and responsibilities may be assigned at the company’s discretion.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma / GED from an accredited school or institution (post-high school degree in welding-related field is a plus).
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience related to compressor or turbine rotors/components.
  • Proficiency in TIG and ARC welding; PWHT setup preferred.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Ability to work in an environment involving constant physical activities such as pushing, pulling, lifting, stretching, bending, etc.
  • Willingness to stand, sit, bend, and walk for significant portions of the shift.
  • No allergies or issues related to handling metals, including aluminum, copper, bronze, and steel.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs. (with assistance).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; basic computer and math skills.
  • Familiarity with rotating equipment including centrifugal compressors, steam turbines, axial compressors, hot gas expanders, power turbines, and screw compressors.

Skills

  • Safety-first mindset with self and coworkers.
  • Expert in use of precision measuring equipment (micrometer, caliper, etc.).
  • Ability to operate small lifts, pallet jacks, and other lifting equipment.
  • Ability to work around and use large propane/acetylene torches.
  • Ability to work in a shop environment for a minimum of 8 hours per day, primarily standing or sitting as required.

Schedule

This is a full-time position with a minimum expectation of 40 hours per week. Additional hours, including evenings or weekends, may be required based on company and project needs. The position may require up to 50% travel, including domestic and international travel.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this position, the employee may work in a shop or field service environment with exposure to moving mechanical parts. The work area is generally clean and safe but may involve moderate noise from machining operations.
