About the Role

The Field Service Engineer Level 2 is an intermediate-level position requiring frequent use and general knowledge of industry practices, techniques, and standards to install, service, and maintain assigned systems. This role demands a solid understanding of equipment theory, application, and technical workings, along with the ability to work independently in customer settings. The position is based in the Seattle/Tacoma, WA area, covering the Pacific Northwest (OR, WA, MT, UT, WY).

Responsibilities

  • Provide industry-leading installation services for new equipment, ensuring attention to detail, high system performance, and professional hand-off to customers.
  • Independently troubleshoot and diagnose issues on assigned equipment to ensure repairs are completed within a single visit.
  • Confirm all Service Visit Orders (SVOs) within 24 hours of finishing work, following procedures for spare parts and time allocations.
  • Provide accurate and detailed billable quotations within 24 hours as requested.
  • Complete all Preventive Maintenance (PMs) for contract customers within 90 days of SVO assignment, using proper checklists and documentation.
  • Escalate unresolved issues quickly using the appropriate process to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Educate customers on possible upgrades and accessories to improve equipment capabilities and pass leads to the proper channels.
  • Connect all available systems to the ZEISS Predictive Service network as agreed by the customer.
  • Conduct special site or system environmental analysis tests as assigned by management.
  • Train customers on basic system operation and maintenance using established guidelines.
  • Properly care for all ZEISS tools and assets provided during assigned responsibilities.
  • Complete all assigned technical training to acquire thorough knowledge of assigned equipment.
  • Engage in personal development using ZEISS CurioZ and self-inspired learning.
  • Ensure personal safety in lab environments and comply with customer site safety protocols.
  • Respect, live, and share ZEISS values with internal and external customers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.

Requirements

  • 4-year degree or technical certificate in a technical/scientific discipline, related military electronics experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience (e.g., 3+ years maintaining complex electromechanical systems).
  • 3-5 years of professional work experience.
  • Sound knowledge of Laboratory Safety requirements for BSL 1, 2, and 3 environments, including specimen handling of pathogenic biohazards.
  • Ability to troubleshoot software, electronics, optics, high voltage, high vacuum, mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of Windows operating environments and basic software applications; familiarity with databases or CRM systems is a plus.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical and mechanical engineering documentation and schematics.
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with a good driving record and ability to drive a company vehicle.

Qualifications

  • Proven ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills in English (verbal and written); German is a plus.
  • Strong administrative and time management skills.

Working Conditions

  • Willingness to engage customers in BSL-2 and BSL-3 facilities; potential for BSL-4 environments.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (average 50% overnight travel).
  • Lifting of heavy equipment crates (~75 lbs).
  • Participation in formal training for six months to one year as a Field Service Engineer.

Pay

The annual pay range for this role is $78,000 - $97,000, eligible for a performance bonus. Salary may vary based on job location, scope, qualifications, experience, and talent complexity.
