Field Scientist

About the role

Perform tests and sampling of air and building materials for asbestos, lead, and other compounds. Also includes monitoring for parameters such as temperature, carbon dioxide, and noise and personnel exposure monitoring. Operate field monitoring equipment. Perform asbestos and lead paint inspections and oversight for abatement projects. Transport material samples and documents to the lab for testing and analysis. Tabulate and prepare data for written reports. Clean and maintain field monitoring equipment. Adhere to strict safety standards.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities

• Independently perform routine and non-routine inspections on a variety of projects for asbestos, lead paint, and other hazardous building materials.
• Direct entry level technicians on projects.
• Calibrate field monitoring equipment, including sampling pumps and direct-reading instruments.
• Perform monitoring and project oversight during asbestos abatement projects.
• Perform advanced field work and assist with project management.
• Follow safety rules, guidelines, and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
• Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.

Requirements

• A high school diploma or equivalent.
• A minimum of 4 years of relevant experience or the equivalent in training and related experience.
• A valid driver’s license with an acceptable violation history.
• Accreditation for asbestos air monitor and asbestos inspector in North Carolina.

Preferred Certification

• A license for asbestos air sampler and asbestos inspector in South Carolina.
• A license or certification for lead inspector or risk assessor in North Carolina or Federal EPA.
• Other national, regional, state, and local environmental related certifications will also be considered if deemed appropriate by the Terracon Department Manager.
