About the role

Independence Excavating is seeking an experienced Field Safety Specialist to oversee project safety, either for a single project or multiple projects based on client or company needs. The Field Safety Specialist enforces company safety policies and procedures, completes deliverables as required by the Regional Safety Manager or Safety Director (including training and audits), and travels 75% locally and 25% regionally.

Responsibilities

  • Regularly visit heavy civil construction locations in the Cleveland Region as required.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and promotion of safety policies, procedures, and best practices (in coordination with the Regional Safety Manager or Safety Director).
  • Encourage safe work standards and foster a safety-conscious culture among all team members.
  • Conduct inspections and audits, identify and report findings, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Facilitate or assist with various safety training and orientations.
  • Obtain and maintain necessary safety and health certifications, including First Aid/CPR and OSHA 30-hour Construction at minimum.
  • Conduct or assist with safety meetings.
  • Participate in incident investigations and assist in developing lessons learned.
  • Assist in the review of federal, state, and local inspection activity and proposed citations.
  • Perform limited/temporary overnight travel as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Safety Management or equivalent.
  • 2-5 years of relevant safety experience in heavy civil construction.
  • OSHA 30 certification (required).
  • First Aid/CPR certification (required).
  • Energetic and committed to continual learning about construction and industry-related safety.
  • Physically demanding role; must be able to stand/walk for long periods and work in uncomfortable environments.
  • Ability to work on project sites in all weather conditions.
  • Strong communication skills with field workers and managers.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Willingness and ability to manage responsibilities and time according to job site requirements.
  • Supervision or leadership experience.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish (a plus).
