Field Power Generation Technician
Interstate Power Systems in Cedar Rapids, Iowa is expanding and seeking experienced Field Power Generation Technicians/Mechanics to support our growing customer base. This role focuses on generator service, maintenance, and repair in a dynamic field-based environment.
About the role
As a Field Power Generation Technician/Mechanic, you will diagnose, maintain, and repair power generation systems—primarily diesel-driven generators—to ensure reliable and efficient operation. You’ll work directly in the field, responding to customer needs, performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical issues, and completing repairs safely and efficiently. This position is ideal for a technician with strong technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while representing Interstate Power Systems professionally.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair all makes of generators.
- Demonstrate basic-level knowledge of and/or experience with power generation products.
- Complete preventative maintenance and repairs on generators or components at customer sites with minimal supervision.
- Diagnose, repair, adjust, and modify components of the generator, engine, and switchgear.
- Maintain positive interactions with service writers, foremen, parts department, and customers.
- Keep paperwork updated and submit upon completion.
- Meet certification requirements.
- Perform administrative duties related to the role.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience working with industrial power generation sets.
- Experience with diesel and natural gas engines, electrical switchgear, and automatic transfer switches.
- Must have your own set of general tools.
- Ability to work with diagnostic computers for troubleshooting and repairs.
- Use computers for web-based training and repair order systems.
- Physically able to lift and work with no restrictions.
- Clean driving record and ability to pass a D.O.T. Physical.
Qualifications
- Technical degree or certification a plus.
- Positive attitude and excellent customer relationship skills.
- Basic-level knowledge of and/or experience with power generation products.
- Ability to set goals and accomplish them.
- Desire to pursue certification opportunities for up-to-date product training.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong work ethic and ability to work with little supervision.
