Field Operating Engineer

About the Role

Provides technical maintenance and repair for Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)-owned mechanical and electrical equipment, with a major focus on heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems.

Qualifications

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
• One (1) year of experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems.
• Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
• May be required to work evening and/or night shifts, accept call-back or regular overtime, and/or assume emergency call-out list status.
• Knowledge of HVAC operating systems, equipment, tools, and procedures used in operation, maintenance, and repair.
• Mechanical ability to inspect, diagnose problems, and make repairs or request appropriate mechanics.
• Ability to maintain logs and write reports.

Responsibilities

• Assist school-based operating engineers in preventive maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment to ensure proper operation and timely preventive maintenance.
• Complete various ad-hoc assignments at different locations for varying durations.
• Collaborate with school-based operating engineers on large preventive or corrective maintenance projects involving HVAC or mechanical/electrical equipment.
• Adjust, service, repair, and perform preventive maintenance and filter replacement on all HVAC equipment for optimum efficiency.
• Perform or assist with emergency heating and air-conditioning work as required.
• Work with facilities management staff in regular or emergency situations.
• Perform other related duties as required or assigned.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements

This role requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity. Duties may involve standing, sitting, walking, bending, climbing ladders, and kneeling. Exposure to extreme temperatures, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, chemicals, and loud noises is possible. Lifting requirements include up to 25 lbs. regularly, up to 50 lbs. periodically, and up to 100 lbs. occasionally, alone or with assistance.

Pay

Salary Range: $55,342 - $95,754

Salary Grade: Unified Scale-Schedule A/Grade 010-FEU-OP

Contract Length: 260-Day Contract

Pay Frequency: Biweekly
