The Field Medical Director, Oncology East role is part of the Field Based Medical Leadership Team, responsible for delivering on field engagement strategies and tactics aligned to medical plans for their therapeutic area(s) and monitoring team progress toward impact metrics. They provide strategic leadership and accountability to ensure field excellence and performance through effective coaching and prioritization of Medical Science Liaison (MSL) activities. MSL managers work cross-functionally with field leaders (e.g., Commercial, Market Access) and office-based personnel.

The Field Medical Director's main objectives are to demonstrate value for the business and customers via coaching, developing, and leading the MSL team aligned to the following core accountability areas:

  • Clinical Study Support

Responsibilities

The role involves the following key responsibilities, with approximate time allocation:

  • Team coaching, development, and career planning (primary focus):
    • Coach, train, and manage MSL performance and development to ensure excellence in execution and achievement of strategic objectives across core accountability areas.
    • Perform field visits with individual MSLs to support territory development and promptly address challenges or issues. Document field visits via CRM coaching reports within 2 business days.
    • Guide individual and team development (clinical, technical, and leadership skills) through customized development plans.
    • Select and develop key talent to ensure continuity of critical roles through succession planning.
    • Attract and retain top talent while fostering a positive team culture.
    • Successfully onboard new talent to accelerate time to effective field interactions and team engagement.
    • Ensure MSLs possess robust scientific knowledge and communication skills to engage in balanced and impactful scientific exchanges with external stakeholders, enhancing understanding of the therapeutic area and medical value of products.
    • Confirm all MSLs fulfill global and corporate training requirements for compliance with applicable internal and external policies and regulations.
  • Medical strategy, tactical execution, and performance measurement:
    • Monitor individual and team progress against medical and business priorities, ensuring appropriate prioritization of MSL activities.
    • Ensure each MSL develops and executes a regional field medical plan aligned with the US Medical Affairs (USMA) organization’s annual Strategic Medical and Tactical Plans.
    • Co-create and develop Therapeutic Area (TA) Medical Plans with the TA Senior Medical Director and team, leading execution to ensure alignment with medical priorities.
    • Set and monitor individual and team performance goals, ensuring excellence in execution and achievement of objectives through metrics, resources, and budgets.
    • Utilize CRM dashboards to track individual and team progress against Field Medical Standards. Escalate discordance with appropriate stakeholders.
    • Maintain regular communication of Field Impact and progress toward objectives.
    • Contribute to internal project teams, appropriately prioritizing field activities.
    • Attend internal team meetings and conduct one-on-one meetings with direct reports.
  • Lead and communicate scientific and medical insights:
    • Lead internal collaboration around insights generation activities, ensuring data, facts, and observations are gathered, reviewed, and analyzed to identify insights for strategic decision-making.
    • Report and facilitate communication of key scientific, medical, and clinical insights to provide value and potential impact for internal cross-functional stakeholders.
    • Lead insight communication (including escalation where necessary) to regional and global teams, closing the loop with the MSL team on follow-up and business impact.
    • Ensure MSLs compliantly recognize and share competitive intelligence with relevant internal stakeholders.
  • Administrative work:
    • Document field coaching reports in CRM within 2 business days.
    • Complete all company-assigned trainings and certifications.
    • Stay updated on emerging scientific, technological, and regulatory advances to inform strategic decision-making.
    • Create, execute, and update individual development plans.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in a relevant scientific or medical field (e.g., PhD, PharmD, MD).
  • 3+ years of experience in a field medical role or the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Prior experience as a people leader (preferred).
  • Prior experience working with healthcare systems, payers, healthcare providers, and researchers (preferred).
