About the Role

A Field Service Mechanic at Irby Construction Company will operate and drive trucks, including tractor trailers, to support assigned work activity. This role is based in the region surrounding Borger, TX, and involves repairs in field conditions.

Responsibilities

• Analyze malfunctions and repair, rebuild, and maintain motor vehicles and construction equipment, including pickup trucks, heavier trucks (½ ton to 10 ton GVWR), company automobiles, cranes, power shovels, digger derricks, aerial lift equipment, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, pumps, compressors, portable generators, portable power supplies, hydraulic press heads and motors, and pneumatic tools.
• Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
• Test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
• Weld or arrange for welding of broken parts and structural members.
• Fabricate or arrange for fabrication of parts or devices used in construction and maintenance of power and telecommunication systems.
• Perform general cleanup of equipment and direct workers engaged in cleaning parts; assist with assembly and disassembly of equipment.
• Repair, adjust, and maintain specialized machinery such as conductor pullers, tensioners, spacer buggies, drilling, and cutting equipment.
• Plan work procedures using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
• Raise equipment using hydraulic jack or hoist to access mechanical units bolted to the underside of equipment.
• Remove, as needed, engine, transmission, or differential using wrenches and hoist.
• Disassemble units and inspect parts for wear using test equipment, calipers, and thickness gauges.
• Repair or replace parts or send equipment off-site for part replacements (e.g., pistons, rods, gears, valves, and bearings).
• Overhaul or replace carburetors, fuel injection systems, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.
• Rebuild or send off-site for rebuilding crankshafts, cylinder blocks, valve heads, etc.
• Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
• Reline and adjust brakes and clutches; align front ends; repair or replace shock absorbers; solder leaks in radiators.
• Mend damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts.
• Replace and adjust headlights; install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
• Identify safety equipment on specific pieces of equipment.
• Read and use operations manuals for specific equipment.
• Identify components and controls of machines.
• Perform daily walk-arounds, routine and periodic checks, inspections, and maintenance of equipment.
• Learn and interpret proper hand signals.
• Assist with the service and maintenance schedule of equipment.
• Read and use all capacity charts for equipment.
• Perform setup of equipment, connect and disconnect trailers.
• Secure loads on trailers.
• Spot or recognize potential danger areas and take evasive actions on your own initiative.
• Perform other duties as needed.

Requirements

• May be required to relocate as work requirements demand.
• At least three (3) years of experience as a field service mechanic.
• Valid commercial driver’s license.
• Current Medical Certification Card.
• May be required to obtain light crane certification for boom trucks, etc.
• Trustworthy, safety-minded, and familiar with all safety procedures/requirements applicable to the equipment.
• May work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems.
• May attend training classes or seminars for new processes, safety regulations, or refresher training.
• Must meet OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910 requirements for operated equipment.

Physical Qualifications

• Lifting and handling materials up to 60 pounds unassisted.
• Walking and working across uneven terrain.
• Good manual dexterity and machine-controlling skills.
• Able to stoop, kneel, crouch, dig, and reach.
• Exposure to hot and cold weather conditions.
• Climbing on and off large trucks and equipment.
