S&ME is seeking a full-time Field Geologist to support drilling operations for Southern Company across Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. This role involves technical direction and execution of subsurface field investigations for engineering site assessments, environmental studies, and foundation remediation.
About the Role
- Field oversight for monitoring well installation, foundation investigations, and underground utility investigations
- Perform soil and rock logging
- Prepare professional logs for soil, rock, and monitoring well construction data
- Manage drilling and related contractors according to company guidelines
- Interface with customers and assist Drilling Services leaders to facilitate field investigations
You will report to Southern Company's Logan Martin Dam office in Vincent, Alabama, for weekly scheduled projects. Extensive travel is required, typically traveling directly from home to each site. A company truck and travel expense coverage will be provided.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in geologic, environmental, engineering, construction, or related field
- Professional Geology (PG) license is a plus
- Experience with field investigations using various drilling methods, soil/rock logging, environmental sampling, and regulatory knowledge
- Proficiency in gINT Boring Log Program and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work with limited supervision and maintain a safety-first mindset
Physical Demands
- Work majority of time outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Walk over rough, uneven terrain and stand for up to 12 hours a day
- Routinely lift and carry 40-50 lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
- Safely maneuver field equipment (e.g., loaded wheelbarrow) on uneven ground around active construction sites
