About the role

The Indiana State Board of Accounts (SBOA) is dedicated to ensuring the financial integrity and accountability of state and local government entities. Field Examiners audit these institutions, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Design and perform necessary audit procedures to examine assigned government units.
  • Serve as lead auditor on audit teams, taking responsibility for oversight and coordination of the work of other team members.
  • Prepare detailed reports on audit findings related to financial position and compliance.
  • Audit federal funds received by governmental units.
  • Research and interpret statutes, local ordinances, and authoritative standards to prepare audits.
  • Consult with personnel of participating organizations to ensure adequate recording of financial transactions.
  • Ensure adherence to proper accounting and management policies by elected and appointed public officials.
  • Lead special projects such as election recounts as needed.
  • Provide on-the-job instruction and supervisory support to agency staff.

Requirements

Residency in the assigned area is preferred. A valid driver's license is required. Must attend required continuing professional education annually to stay updated on changes in statutes and accounting theories and principles. Thorough knowledge of governmental and accounting standards is essential. Ability to interpret, analyze, and record data is required. Confidentiality is important. Must be able to modify and design audit plans based on the review of control structures.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of accounting experience applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role.
  • Thorough knowledge of governmental and generally accepted accounting and auditing standards.
  • Ability to interpret, analyze, and record data and fiscal information to reach logical conclusions.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to modify and/or design the audit plan procedures as a result of the review of the control structure at the audit site.
  • Ability to study and evaluate financial and managerial control structures for both manual and computer systems.
  • Effectively communicate both orally and in writing.

Must be able to articulate or demonstrate thorough knowledge of governmental and accounting standards, ability to interpret, analyze, and record data, confidentiality, ability to modify and design audit plans, ability to study and evaluate financial and managerial control structures, effective communication skills, and ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Pay

This position starts at an annual salary of $53,222 with the opportunity for adjustment based on the relevant experience and skill sets. The agency utilizes three examiner-level classifications based on acquired competencies and demonstrated skill sets. The salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience. Most new hires begin as Level 3 Examiners and progress to Level 1 based on competencies and acquired skills.
