Field Engineer (Mechanical)

About the Role

Provides construction site engineering resources and expertise during construction phases of projects to interpret designs, adjust designs to meet site conditions, manage technical issues, perform quality inspections, monitor technical submittals and configuration management, verify installed quantities, support construction supervision, and provide final technical approval of completed construction tasks to ensure construction conforms to design specifications.

Provides support to Construction direct-hire craft by performing Mechanical/Piping Field Engineering responsibilities supporting construction projects or technical oversight for subcontracts. Provides technical/programmatic guidance on multiple and complex construction management tasks. Makes decisions regarding methods independently and, working with the Construction Managers, applies financial commitment authority for field changes. Completes assigned tasks under minimal supervision and technical direction.

Responsibilities

• Reviews and interprets drawings and specifications to determine if information is adequate for successful completion of construction.
• Oversees construction work for compliance with drawings and specifications.
• Performs constructability reviews during design preparation and execution.
• Maintains direct relationship with the Construction Managers/Construction Superintendents and the responsible Project Managers (PM) to execute the scope of work.
• Provides technical support in all phases of construction formation, project execution, testing/inspection, and project closeout.
• Maintains records of installed quantities and completed construction work.
• Participates in obtaining any required permits/clearances, lockouts, Escort Agreements, and work authorizations prior to commencing work on site.
• Performs verification of work in progress to ensure requirements of safety, security, quality (technical drawings and specifications), environmental control, workmanship, and schedule are met.
• Assists in the preparation of procedures, administrative and technical documents.
• Prepares/approves purchase requisitions for materials and services.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical engineering discipline. Minimum 4 years of relevant experience. Typical experience ranging from 7 to 10 years.
• OR Master’s degree: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience. Typical experience ranging from 7 to 10 years.
• In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
• Requires a Q clearance; however, all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
• This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which requires successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
• This position may be categorized as a “designated position” identified by 10 C.F.R. Part 709, requiring successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation that may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
• U.S. citizenship is a requirement for security clearance applicants.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in positions such as a Mechanical Field/Construction/Quality Control Engineer.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with construction craft or supervision in meeting program/project objectives.
• Effective oral and written communication skills and ability to interact effectively with all levels of personnel and management.
• Above average organizational skills.
• Knowledge of single or multi-discipline construction operations and processes.
• Knowledge with the initiation and processing of Construction Inspection Packaging (Work Packaging).
• Previous experience with ASME NQA-1, B31.1, & B31.3.
• Knowledge of organized Construction Labor and Building Trades.
• Self-starter who can manage multiple projects/tasks with minimal supervisor direction and work well within a team.
