About the role

UL Solutions works on-site with our customers to understand their needs and how they meet the market's needs. We help ensure that all certified products continue to comply with UL Solutions' requirements and partner with customers to help them meet their changing needs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform NFPA certification testing on Fire Equipment Apparatus Aerial Devices and Pumpers (including aerial component weldment inspections) and Ground Ladders.
  • Conduct field evaluations of fire apparatus using NDT testing methods including magnetic particle, visual, ultrasound, and liquid penetrant.
  • Perform safety and non-safety certification inspections and field evaluations in accordance with required performance standards and requirements.
  • Analyze and evaluate examination and test results against applicable requirements.
  • Use technical judgment to determine whether noncompliance variations compromise the continued application of the UL Mark and assess acceptability of alternatives.
  • Audit customer quality management or assurance programs.
  • Interpret and analyze examination and test results against UL requirements, verifying accuracy of manufacturers' measuring equipment and reviewing production and inspection records.
  • Periodically review manufacturers' programs of production, inspection, and shipping to ensure compliance with UL requirements.
  • Evaluate and facilitate options for corrective action where variations from UL requirements are noted.
  • Understand construction and test acceptance criteria in FUII and requirements of applicable sections of Standards, FUIIs, and/or procedures for Special Competency required categories.
  • Communicate with manufacturers, customers, Authorities Having Jurisdiction, and others to conduct certification inspections.
  • Investigate the misuse of UL Mark.
  • Provide general information on policies and procedures for UL services and promote new and existing services.
  • Discuss procedures, test methods, test results, sample selection, and product variations to resolve problems or develop new requirements.
  • Use instruments such as micrometers, voltmeters, ammeters, and other UL-supplied equipment to perform inspections.
  • Observe use of manufacturers' equipment necessary to meet UL requirements.
  • Confirm proper calibration of manufacturers' measuring equipment and perform calibration of UL-supplied equipment.
  • Document examination, variations, and test results on appropriate UL forms.
  • Maintain logs for scheduling inspections, time, and expenses.
  • Perform various calculations in engineering fields such as electrical, mechanical, chemical, or fire protection.
  • Resolve process, management system, and engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on acceptability of variations.
  • Apply HBSE (Hazardous Based Safety Engineering) principles and concepts during Variation Notice handling.
  • Integrate continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and adhere to all physical and digital security practices.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Requirements

  • AAS in Non-Destructive Testing required.
  • Familiarity with large emergency vehicles or commercial vehicles with hydraulic equipment is a plus.
  • Previous certification to CP 189 or SNT-TC-1A, VT, MT, UT is a plus.
  • Strong mechanical/electrical aptitude and technical ability.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interface with clients.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and elevated areas.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 70 lbs, both assisted and unassisted.
  • Ability to meet vision requirements as outlined in CP 189.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel, IBM Laptop Computer/Lotus Notes.
  • Position is remote and may require up to 50% overnight travel.

  • Estimated salary range: $65,000 to $75,000, based on job-related knowledge/skills, experience, and geographical location.
  • Eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 5% of the base salary.
