Field Engineer

About the Role

The Field Engineer (FE) works directly for the Superintendent and is expected to exercise judgment and discretion in making recommendations, implementing policies and procedures, and handling a wide variety of matters in the field. The position is normally, but not necessarily, preparatory to becoming an Office Engineer or Project Engineer. The primary purpose of the position is to proactively aid the Superintendent in front-line field management. This role requires a considerable amount of work, responsibility, persistence, problem-solving ability, and a good attitude, as the FE is responsible for the majority of the layout on a project, supervision of trade workers and subcontractor employees, as well as lift drawings, safety, and quality control responsibilities. Although the majority of a Field Engineer's time will be spent in the field, some duties will require work in the field office. This is a safety-sensitive position.

Responsibilities

• Project layout (surveying) in conformance with design and contract documents
• Check concrete forms for accuracy and adequacy of construction, including all embedded items, before placement of concrete
• Perform production trend analysis for quantities of work in place and report for the weekly and monthly schedule and cost control reports
• Assist with quality control, site safety initiatives, and coordination of trade partners as delegated by the project superintendent
• Direct a small workforce to gain supervisory experience
• Coordinate material deliveries by checking material requirements in advance and comparing with the delivery status
• Inspect materials delivered to the job for quantity, quality, and condition, and report on missing and/or damaged items
• Assist foremen and trade partners with interpretation of plans and specifications
• Oversight of trade partners, as assigned, and direction of workforces (e.g., a labor crew) of employees or trade partner employees to gain supervisory experience
• Participate in jobsite safety meetings, weekly safety audits, etc.
• Collaborate with the VDC team on VDC scope of work, execution plan, and deliverables related to field operations
• Review and navigate within the current 3D model viewing and scheduling software

Requirements

• A 4-year degree in Civil, Structural, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field
• 1 year of experience and/or a combination of education and experience
• Valid Driver’s License
• Strong communication skills
• Proficiency in computer software: Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel-based templates), ProjectSight, Primavera, and AutoDesk Suite

Preferred Qualifications

• Past internships in the construction industry are preferred but not required

Physical Requirements

Moderate Work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The individual in this position will periodically:

• Walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and finger/type
• Move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, boxes, cabinets, etc.
• Operate a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, phone, and computer printer
• Communicate with employees and external stakeholders regarding a variety of topics related to office administration
• Compute, analyze, and conceptualize mathematical calculations and formulas
• Sit in a stationary position in front of a computer screen
• Read written communications, mail submissions, blueprints, and take/verify field measurements
• Climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps at various heights
• Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching (balancing)
• Bend the body downward and forward by the spine at the waist (stooping)
• Maintain visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate

Work environment includes:

• Occasional exposure to high and low temperatures
• Frequent exposure to noisy environments and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind

Pay

(Northern California Only)

• Base Salary: $78,000
• COLA (cost of living adjustment): $4,200 - $25,800 based on project location
• Total Compensation: $82,200 - $103,800 based on project location
