About the role

Stantec is seeking a driven Field Ecologist to join a team providing permitting strategy, environmental assessment, and technical support for projects requiring environmental approvals in Florida and the Gulf region. The position involves a mix of field and office work, including extensive travel and remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct wetland delineation and assessment
  • Carry out vegetation inventories and monitoring
  • Perform wildlife surveys and habitat assessments
  • Conduct aquatic assessments (lakes and streams)
  • Review background data
  • Prepare environmental permit applications
  • Review endangered resource records
  • Collect, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data
  • Assist with and prepare portions of written reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps

Requirements

  • An interest in ecosystems, natural resource conservation, and the outdoors
  • The ability to solve problems using critical thinking and consider safety
  • A positive attitude in all working conditions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including excellent MS Office skills
  • Strong note-taking skills and attention to detail
  • Experience working in a team atmosphere and independently
  • A working understanding of HSSE policies and procedures
  • The willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work
  • Conscientious, organized, and disciplined
  • Builds and maintains productive professional and personal networking relationships

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline (biology, ecology, natural resources, soil science, or related natural resources field)
  • Demonstrated experience with biological surveys in the region
  • At least 2 years of experience in environmental consulting or regulatory roles
  • Comfortable with computers and GPS-based equipment
  • Technical writing skills necessary for this position

Skills

An interest in ecosystems, natural resource conservation, and the outdoors is essential. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including excellent MS Office skills, are required. Strong note-taking skills and attention to detail are also important. The ability to solve problems using critical thinking and to complete tasks with consideration to safety is important. A positive attitude in all working conditions is key. Experienced at working well in a team atmosphere and independently as required. An ideal candidate will have a good driving record and valid driver’s license, and be willing to travel and conduct field work in potentially remote areas for extended periods (up to 75% of the time).
