Primary Responsibilities
- Fiber Splicing (Primary Focus)
- Perform fusion splicing of single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables with precision to minimize signal loss
- Prepare fiber cable sheaths, splice and test individual fibers, and dress fibers within enclosures and splice cases
- Conduct OTDR testing to verify splice quality and troubleshoot network performance issues
- Lineman Ground Hand Support (Cross-Training Role)
- Transition to lineman ground-hand responsibilities during slower splicing periods to maintain full-time work
- Assist aerial lineman with pole installations, material handling, and equipment setup
- Operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, and other construction equipment as trained
- Perform ground-based safety duties including traffic control and work zone setup
- Fiber Jetting & Installation Support
- Operate fiber jetting machines and associated equipment to place fiber cable through conduit systems
- Pull cable through conduit and ducting using mechanical equipment and manual methods
- Troubleshoot and repair damaged or severed fiber connections in the field
- Maintain and perform preventative maintenance on splicing equipment, vehicles, and tools
- Accurately track time, materials, and labor for each project and work order
- Cook up with customers, property owners, and utility companies
- Coordinate professionally with customers, property owners, and utility companies
- Travel to project sites throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, and surrounding states as needed
- Participate in on-call rotation for emergency repairs and service restoration
- Experience: Minimum 1-3 years of fiber optic splicing experience
- Flexibility: Willingness to cross-train and work in lineman ground hand role when needed
- Technical Skills: Proficiency with fusion splicing equipment, OTDR testing, and fiber preparation tools
- Licenses: Valid driver's license with clean driving record; ability to operate company vehicles and trailers
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work at heights, lift 50+ pounds, and perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions
- Knowledge: Understanding of fiber optic cable types, connectors, splice enclosures, and telecommunications infrastructure
- Safety: Commitment to safety-first culture and willingness to obtain relevant certifications
- Prior experience as lineman ground hand or in aerial construction support
- Familiarity with fiber jetting equipment and underground cable placement
- Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, blueprints, and fiber route maps
- OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR, or other safety certifications
