About the role
The Fiber Splicer position at Zayo is responsible for installing, turning-up, testing, and provisioning SONET, WDM, and Ethernet equipment in an optical fiber network. This role involves splicing on new construction and restoration projects for various cable types, conducting thorough testing, and working closely with the Network Operations Center for final acceptance and testing.
Responsibilities
- Install, turn-up, test, and provision SONET, WDM, and Ethernet equipment in an optical fiber network adhering to engineered design.
- Splice on new construction and restoration for a variety of cable types (Loose Tube, Ribbon, Micro, OPGW, etc).
- Conduct and validate all testing of network equipment to ensure adherence to all Zayo Fiber procedures and equipment manufacturer’s specifications.
- Work with the Network Operations Center for final acceptance and testing of all newly installed equipment and rings. Tests to include validation of all provisioning, all alarm monitoring to the NMS (Network Management System), network switch protection, etc.
- Perform advanced analysis and troubleshooting of problems/issues while assisting the NOC/customer.
- Participate in on-call rotation schedule for nights and weekends.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required and assigned.
- Complete and maintain hard copy and/or electronic records of work completed on various assignments, including splice diagrams, patch panels, and test results.
- Interface with customers and carriers in support of service delivery and assurance.
- Work independently for extended periods of time.
- Respond to customer troubles on a 24-hour basis.
- Work closely with the NOC, Sales, Engineering, and customers.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate’s degree or equivalent work experience preferred.
- Valid Driver’s license required.
- Two (2) to five (5) years of experience in the Telecom industry in the splicing, installation, maintenance and repair of network and/or Outside Plant.
- Minimum of two (2) years of field experience or military experience in the wireless telephony, SMR, paging or broadcast industries.
- Prior work experience with base station equipment, NMS, equipment installation and maintenance, low-power broadcast equipment, and experience in both the construction, installation, and maintenance phases.
- Prior use of Volt/Ohm meter, RF power meter, frequency sweep equipment, spectrum analyzer, fault locating equipment, and battery conductance meters.

- Possession or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license for the type of vehicle or equipment operation (e.g. vehicle with bucket lift).
- Broad grasp of telecommunications including SONET, MPLS, and IP system engineering.
- Ability to work independently, be self-motivated, and have equipment installation/maintenance abilities.
- Understanding of a Network Management System, sweep tests, and OTDR tests and data transmission technologies.
