About the Role

The Fiber Splicer is responsible for installing, splicing, testing, restoring, and maintaining fiber optic infrastructure throughout the Greater Los Angeles area. This role supports both planned construction projects and emergency restoration activities on aerial, underground, and indoor fiber networks. The ideal candidate is safety-focused, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently in a fast-paced metropolitan environment. Work will include nights, weekends, holidays, and participation in an on-call rotation supporting critical customer networks.

What You'll Do

  • Splice and restore fiber optic cables including loose tube, ribbon, micro cable, Rapid cable, and other cable types.
  • Perform fusion splicing on both dark fiber and active (lit) services.
  • Install, turn up, test, provision, and troubleshoot SONET, WDM, Ethernet, and optical transport equipment.
  • Conduct OTDR, Optical Power Meter, BER, PMD, Optical Spectrum Analyzer, and other fiber acceptance testing.
  • Interpret splice diagrams, engineering drawings, and network documentation.
  • Complete accurate splice records, test documentation, and electronic work reports.
  • Coordinate with Zayo's Network Operations Center (NOC) for provisioning, testing, alarm validation, and service acceptance.
  • Troubleshoot outages and respond to emergency restoration events while maintaining service level commitments.
  • Perform site surveys and verify proper installation of cabinets, racks, power systems, fiber distribution equipment, and related infrastructure.
  • Label and document all network assets according to engineering standards.
  • Interface professionally with customers, municipalities, utilities, contractors, and permitting agencies.
  • Support hardware and software upgrades at remote network locations.
  • Follow all company safety policies, traffic control requirements, and California work zone regulations.

Los Angeles Market Experience Preferred

Candidates with experience working throughout the Greater Los Angeles region are highly valued, including familiarity with:

  • Dense urban and downtown construction environments
  • Utility coordination and joint-use infrastructure
  • Underground conduit systems and aerial distribution networks
  • Data center and carrier hotel connectivity
  • Emergency fiber restoration in high-traffic metropolitan areas
  • Traffic control and safe work practices on busy roadways
  • Working in varying weather conditions and extended travel throughout Southern California

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree or equivalent technical experience preferred
  • Valid California Driver's License (or ability to obtain upon hire)
  • Two to five (2–5) years of telecommunications experience in fiber splicing, installation, maintenance, or outside plant construction
  • Experience reading engineering prints and splice documentation
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation for emergency restoration

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with:

  • OTDR, Optical Power Meter, BER Test Sets, Optical Spectrum Analyzer
  • SONET, WDM, Ethernet, MPLS, and IP transport networks
  • Fiber distribution panels, AC/DC power systems, rectifiers, and network equipment installation
  • Network Management Systems (NMS)
  • Bucket truck operation or aerial lift equipment
  • Utility locating and damage prevention practices
  • California traffic control standards

Military telecommunications experience is welcomed and highly valued.

Compensation

Estimated hourly pay range: $25.76 – $39.61 per hour. Actual compensation is determined based on experience, certifications, geographic location, and overall qualifications. Non-sales roles may be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive plan. Sales roles may be eligible to participate in a sales incentive plan.
