Fiber-Optics Engineer - Systems

General Dynamics Electric Boat · New London, CT · 3 days ago
AnalystFull-time

About the role

The Electric Boat fiber-optic engineering team designs, qualifies, integrates, and tests the fiber-optic cable system (FOCS) on US Navy submarines. Engineers support the system through each stage of development to ensure timely completion of crucial construction milestones. The FOCS spans multiple submarine platforms and interconnects over twenty (20) different subsystems on each, requiring exceptional communication and organizational skills to coordinate unique interfaces at this scale.

The candidate will interface daily with NAVSEA, government vendors, and various Electric Boat departments. As part of Electric Boat’s Fiber-Optic Center of Excellence, the role involves performing technology investigations, writing white papers, reviewing and approving drawings, resolving construction issues, identifying and managing risks, recognizing cost-reduction opportunities, tracking and evaluating requirements, and managing projects.

While most work is office-based, shipyard visits are often required to troubleshoot construction issues. Opportunities for hands-on work and travel exist but are less common.
