Fiber Construction Horizontal Directional Driller II

About the role

TDS Telecom is seeking a Telecom Horizontal Directional Driller (HDD) II to join our Construction and Service Enablement team. This role involves operating and maintaining construction equipment, installing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing fiber optic facilities. The position requires a self-motivated individual with attention to detail, strong teamwork and communication skills, and technical proficiency in telecommunication systems.

Responsibilities

• Perform general construction and maintenance of aerial and buried fiber facilities.
• Operate and maintain construction equipment, including directional drills, trenchers, backhoes, and plows.
• Install, splice, test, troubleshoot, and repair fiber optic facilities.
• Conduct cable fault acceptance tests and locate defective fiber.
• Update GIS, maps, and as-builts; set and label infrastructure like peds, vaults, and handholes.
• Restore worksites to original condition upon project completion.
• Train and mentor team members as needed.
• Maintain construction equipment.
• Provide support to field service technicians and complete required documentation promptly.

Qualifications

• 1+ years of construction equipment operation utilizing various underground and aerial construction equipment.
• Current military service or prior military service with an honorable discharge.
• Valid driver’s license and eligibility for DOT requirements.
• Ability to obtain a Class A CDL.
• Ability to climb poles, ladders, towers, and other structures as needed.
• Ability to kneel, dig, lift, and pull.

Pay

The pay for this position ranges from $25.13 to $37.69 per hour. Actual offers will be based on skills, qualifications, experience, location, and role-specific competencies. Some positions may also offer additional compensation, such as bonuses or equity awards.
