About the role
The National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) is part of the FDA's research campus in Jefferson, Arkansas. This fellowship offers advanced, hands-on training in nanotechnology and polymer research relevant to FDA's public health mission.
Responsibilities
- Engage in structured research training under the mentorship of FDA scientists.
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary research environment.
- Develop novel methods for the synthesis of polymers, nanomaterials, microplastics, and nanoplastics.
- Perform pyrolysis or thermogravimetric analysis coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
- Use various particle size measurement techniques in solution phase.
- Participate in high-quality, high-impact research projects aimed at standardized method and methodology development leading to publications.
Requirements
- Earned a doctoral degree in organic synthesis, polymer chemistry, nanomaterials chemistry or related fields within the last 5 years or anticipated to be received by 12/31/2026.
- Prior experience in the synthesis of polymers, handling analytical instrumentation, obtaining and analyzing spectral data, and a track record of research publications solving complex problems.
Qualifications
- U.S. citizenship or LPR status.
- Read and sign the FDA Education and Training Agreement within 30 days of start date.
Skills
- Experience in the synthesis of polymers.
- Handling analytical instrumentation for characterizing polymers.
- Obtaining and analyzing spectral data.
- A track record of research publications solving complex problems.

The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Schedule
The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of FDA and is contingent on the availability of funds.
