About the role
The Department Head oversees all aspects of the breeding and/or farrowing operations, including staff management, equipment maintenance, and adherence to company standards.
Responsibilities
- Take an active role in safety programs and enforce policies.
- Perform duties according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
- Maintain positive relationships with colleagues.
- Report broken or faulty equipment promptly.
- Attend mandatory meetings and training sessions.
- Follow AI protocols and achieve conception rates.
- Manage inventories of medications and supplies.
- Understand and apply AI, sow monitoring, pig care, sorting, fostering, manure feedback, prostaglandin use, and time efficiencies.
- Assist in equipment, facility, and grounds maintenance.
- Handle animals safely and correctly.
- Record accurate data and maintain records.
- Train animals for electronic feeding systems.
- Assist with sow conditioning.
- Assign schedules for power washing.
- Perform supervisory duties.
- Complete other tasks as assigned.
Requirements
- Demonstrated expertise in swine management.
- Ability to manage inventory and throughput efficiently.
- Proven ability to manage people.
- Physical capabilities to lift and move up to 100 lbs.
- Ability to work in physically demanding environments.
- Ability to follow safety protocols and handle hazardous materials.
- Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in swine management.
- Knowledge of AI protocols and procedures.
- Ability to lift and move up to 100 lbs.
- Experience with electronic feeding systems.
- Experience with sow monitoring and pig care.
- Experience with manure feedback and prostaglandin use.
- Experience with equipment and facilities maintenance.
- Experience with animal handling and health assessments.
- Experience with biosecurity protocols.
- Experience with PQA+ training.
- Experience with animal welfare procedures.
- Experience with record keeping and database systems.
