Family Nurse Practitioner for Acute Pain Service, Medical Pain Service and Pain Management Center Clinic
Primary location: Burnet Campus, Surgical Pain Services. Full-time, 0.9 FTE (36 hours per week), 7 ten-hour shifts per pay period with every other pay period including a 4-hour non-clinical shift. Shift: Days.
About the role
We are seeking a skilled and empathetic Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) to join our Surgical Pain Services and Medical Pain Services teams. This role ensures effective pain management for post-operative and medical patients during evening hours, promoting comfort, safety, and continuity of care.
Responsibilities
- Conduct evening rounds on post-operative surgical and medical pain service patients, assessing pain levels and overall clinical status.
- Develop, implement, and adjust individualized pain management plans in collaboration with surgical, primary, and pain management teams.
- Monitor patient response to pain interventions, ensuring comfort, safety, and effectiveness.
- Respond to acute pain issues arising during evening hours and modify plans as needed.
- Provide patient, family, and nursing education regarding pain management strategies and recovery expectations.
- Collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary care team, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and other healthcare providers.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough documentation of assessments, care plans, and interventions.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing pain management protocols and patient outcomes.
- Perform history and/or physical exams on patients presenting for care in area of expertise.
- Assess and diagnose illnesses, including chronic and acute conditions.
- Formulate, document, and monitor a treatment plan, including ordering and monitoring therapeutic interventions such as diets, laboratory, radiological, and diagnostic tests.
- Provide clinical consultation and order interdisciplinary consults.
- Prescribe medications in accordance with Federal and State Law & Rules and CCHMC policy.
- Attain and maintain competency in subspecialty practice, skills, and procedures in accordance with Joint Commission standards for focused (FPPE) and ongoing (OPPE) professional practice evaluation.
- Develop outcomes as measurable goals that provide direction for continuity of care and consistency among providers.
- Develop, prioritize, evaluate, and modify an individualized comprehensive plan of care addressing each diagnosis or issue.
- Incorporate new knowledge and strategies to initiate change in practice if desired outcomes are not achieved.
- Maintain professional behaviors aligned with core values and care standards, and participate in quality improvement activities or research.
- Participate in lifelong learning and professional development activities to improve skills and competence in clinical practice/role performance.
- Serve as preceptor, role model, or mentor, and contribute to the professional development of peers/colleagues.

- Provide leadership in care management to achieve optimal quality, cost-effective care.
- Delegate appropriate monitoring, assessment, and interventions according to the patient and scope of practice of the caregiver.
- Provide consultation to influence the identified plan of care and enhance the abilities of others to provide healthcare.
- Make appropriate referrals and discuss recommendations with patient/family/caregiver.
- Order and/or perform appropriate treatments, therapies, and procedures based on current knowledge, research, and practice.
- Provide patient/family/caregiver with diagnostic and laboratory results as well as actual/potential benefits, limitations, and adverse effects of proposed therapies.
- Use a systematic, ongoing evaluation of assessment data and outcomes to revise or resolve diagnoses, outcomes, the plan of care, and implementation as needed.
- Evaluate the accuracy of the diagnosis, effectiveness of interventions, and the plan of care strategies in relation to attainment of expected outcomes.
- Utilize the results of the evaluation to determine impact on the patient/family/caregiver, organization, and system to make/recommend process or structural changes.
Requirements
- Licensed Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) with active or eligible Ohio licensure.
- Previous experience in pain management, surgical services, acute care, or inpatient settings preferred.
- Strong clinical assessment and critical-thinking skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
- Commitment to patient- and family-centered care.
- Master’s degree in related field or Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree.
- Licensure and certification in accordance with CCHMC Delineation of Privileges.
- Multi-state licensure in addition to Ohio licensure may be required based on subspecialty.

Pay
Expected starting pay range: $104,000.00 - $130,686.40. Starting pay is based on experience, skills, and equity; exceptions may apply for highly qualified candidates. Additional pay (e.g., shift, on-call, or weekend differentials) may apply.
