About the role

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute dedicated to improving the systems of democracy and justice in the United States. Our work spans voting rights, campaign finance reform, ending mass incarceration, and constitutional protections in national security policies.

Responsibilities

  • Support both the Democracy and Elections & Government Programs
  • Ensure fair, representative, secure, and independent elections
  • Work to eliminate barriers to full and equal political participation
  • Advocate for public policies and institutions that reflect a diverse, engaged, and energetic democracy
  • Collaborate with grassroots groups, advocacy organizations, and reform-minded government officials
  • Conduct legal, policy, and factual research to advance administrative and legislative advocacy at federal, state, and local levels
  • Create public education and scholarship
  • Participate in litigation in trial and appellate courts
  • Conduct legal research and writing for amicus briefs, policy reports, and other advocacy documents
  • Draft communications to legislators
  • Afford public comments to federal agencies
  • Attend coalition meetings
  • Write posts for the Brennan Center website
  • Other related activities as assigned

Requirements

Note: This internship is in-person at our New York office. Excellent legal research, analysis, and writing skills; initiative, imagination, and versatility; and a passion for our issues are required. Benefits

Note: This internship is only open to law students in Fall 2026. Hours: Approximately 10 - 15 hours per week. Pay: $20.90 per hour. Duration: September – December 2026.
