About the role

Conservation Corps New Mexico (CCNM) is an AmeriCorps program aiming to continue the legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s. CCNM crews are typically based in Las Cruces, NM and all project work will take place on public lands in New Mexico and surrounding states. This is an AmeriCorps position aimed at engaging future leaders who protect, restore, and enhance our public lands through community-based service.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate a safe and positive crew member experience by setting an example of enthusiasm, dedication, and a strong work ethic throughout work and camp life.
  • Communicate directions, project specifications, and provide constructive criticism throughout the term of service.
  • Expand leadership strategies and assume full leadership duties if the Crew Leader is unavailable.

Qualifications

  • A United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
  • At least 17 years of age.
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior AmeriCorps service and experience with backpacking, wilderness travel, camp management and outdoor leadership.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to work in a changing work environment, including willingness to work a varying schedule.
  • Excellent communication, teaching/mentoring, and full conflict resolution and team-building skills.
  • Valid driver's license and an insurable driving record.
  • Relevant bachelor's degree.

Physical Requirements

  • Exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • The ability to safely drive an organizational vehicle may also be required for some positions.

Evaluation and Reporting

Performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service. Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
