Western Michigan University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is seeking candidates for a full-time Faculty Specialist position focused on undergraduate instruction and student success. Two overlapping needs are available: one with an Aerospace Engineering focus and one with a Mechanical Engineering focus.
Responsibilities
- Teach a full load of undergraduate courses, laboratories, and recitations in the assigned discipline (Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering).
- Develop and update course materials to align with current industry standards and accreditation requirements.
- Mentor and advise undergraduate students, including supervision of Senior Design projects.
- Maintain and manage instructional laboratories and equipment.
- Participate in departmental, college, and university service committees.
- Collaborate with faculty to support student recruitment and retention efforts.
- Opportunity to engage in collaborative research activities within the department and college (not required to develop an independent research program).
Requirements
- Earned Master of Science degree from an accredited institution in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related discipline, and a minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience.
- or an earned Ph.D. (or equivalent) from an accredited institution in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in teaching at the university level.
- Significant industrial experience in mechanical or aerospace design, manufacturing, or analysis.
- Experience with industry-standard engineering software and tools (e.g., CAD, FEA, CFD).
- A track record of effective mentorship or supervision of student projects.
