About the Role

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Bethel Musculoskeletal Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine are recruiting a full-time faculty member at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure in the biological sciences. This position focuses on expanding the research program to apply knowledge from cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, stem cells, gene therapy, biomaterials, microphysiological systems, and tissue engineering to better understand musculoskeletal tissue development, growth, injury, disease processes, and therapeutic approaches for repair.

The successful candidate will lead highly interdisciplinary research and contribute to academic duties associated with the B.S., M.S., Ph.D., and M.D. educational programs, including mentoring residents and students at all levels.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized transformative research program in bone and/or muscle biology and disorders.
• Publish in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
• Obtain sponsored funding in support of research programs.
• Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
• Participate in departmental and university committees.
• Collaborate in research projects with other research faculty, as well as with faculty from other departments within the medical school, university, and scientific community.
• Serve the profession through relevant professional activities.

Requirements

• PhD in biological sciences or a closely related degree.
• Experience with contemporary cellular and molecular biology techniques.
• Experience with animal models (mandatory).
• Grant-writing ability (mandatory).
• Prior experience related to bone, muscle biology, or both.
• Post-doctoral training.
• Strong clinical, interpersonal, analytical, and writing skills.
• Evidence of interest in and involvement in research.

Qualified physician applicants should have a significant interest and ability in teaching and research, as well as a history of scholarly publications and presentations.

Qualifications

• Academic rank (Associate Professor) requires 6-9 years of experience, commensurate with prior academic achievements.

Child Protection Clearances: PA State Police Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Record Check, and PA Child Abuse History Clearance are required prior to commencement of employment and as a condition of continued employment.
