About the Role

This full-time, tenure-track faculty position is responsible for providing high-quality, accessible instruction and supporting student success through excellence in teaching, professional development, scholarship, and service. Faculty members contribute to the mission and strategic goals of Hagerstown Community College (HCC) through instruction, assessment, curriculum development, student mentorship, shared governance, and community engagement.

As exempt employees, faculty have an expected work week of 37.5 hours and maintain a significant campus presence during the entire 10-month contract period. The faculty member serves within the Mathematics and Science division and contributes to the ongoing development, assessment, and continuous improvement of the Associate of Science, Mathematics concentration and related programs.

Responsibilities

Teaching

• Prepare for and teach an assigned instructional load (15 credits in the fall and spring terms) with a minimum of 5 office hours per week.
• Utilize effective instructional activities and strategies that support learning outcomes and promote student engagement and achievement.
• Develop methods of assessment aligned with learning outcomes at the course, program, general education, and institutional levels.
• Use assessment results to improve instruction, curriculum, and student success initiatives; submit outcome assessment reports by required deadlines.
• Contribute to the continuous review, development, and improvement of curriculum, incorporating current disciplinary knowledge and emerging technologies.
• Maintain and update course materials in the learning management repository to meet college expectations and legal requirements (e.g., federal accessibility).
• Provide clear, effective communication and regular, substantive interaction with students to convey expectations and offer feedback on academic work.
• Advocate for and mentor students, fostering an inclusive learning environment and providing guidance on academic progress, program requirements, and career pathways.
• Maintain accurate records of attendance and scholastic performance; submit requirements such as financial aid attendance and midterm/final grades by deadlines.

Scholarship and Professional Development

• Engage in ongoing professional development to maintain disciplinary expertise and enhance instructional effectiveness.
• Attend required new faculty onboarding and training (e.g., New Faculty Orientation, D2L/Technology training, Quality Matters, Teaching in the Community College).
• Participate in approved conferences, seminars, or workshops.
• Create professional works or publications (e.g., articles, books, performances).
• Complete relevant graduate coursework, professional trainings, internships, or fieldwork.
• Engage in projects such as reviewing publications, participating in professional organization discussions, or peer partnerships.

Service

• Contribute to the college, profession, and community through meaningful service supporting the college’s strategic goals and mission.
• Participate in departmental, divisional, and institutional committees (e.g., search committees, program review, accreditation).
• Provide guidance and support to adjunct faculty to ensure consistency in curriculum implementation, assessment, and instructional quality.
• Promote the college’s mission and strategic plan through programming, initiative development, and student-centered activities (e.g., unit planning, grants, Open House, Career Fair events).
• Serve as an ambassador for the college and discipline by participating in activities that sustain partnerships with the community and external groups.

Mathematics Program-Specific Responsibilities

• Teach daytime, evening, hybrid, or online sections of majors-level general education and program courses, including:
  • MAT 114 Applied Algebra with Trig
  • MAT 115 Quantitative Reasoning
  • MAT 116 Statistical Reasoning
  • MAT 160 Precalculus I
  • MAT 161 Precalculus II
  • MAT 203/204 Calculus I and II sequence
  • Other 200-level math courses with a MAT 203 prerequisite
• Teach other relevant courses (e.g., algebra or calculus-based physics, developmental mathematics) to support enrollment and programs in the Mathematics and Science Division or other divisions (e.g., technology, business, education).
• Collaborate with course and program faculty, adjuncts, and staff on course material adoptions, curriculum review, content creation, outcomes assessment, and maintenance of online learning repositories.
• Provide input and suggestions for programming needs as part of the annual strategic and unit planning process, including division goals, budgetary projections, and equipment maintenance.

Requirements

This position requires a minimum of a master’s degree in mathematics or a closely related field such as mathematical education, physics/engineering, or statistics. A Ph.D. in mathematics or a related field is preferred.

• Foundational technology/software skills related to program needs, with the ability to convey these skills and methodologies to students.
• Experience with curriculum development, outcome assessment, data analysis, and/or grant writing/management is highly desirable.
• Preference given to candidates with recent teaching experience at the undergraduate or community college level.
• Strong organizational, advising, and interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
• Strong instructional and classroom management skills.
• Experience with online learning management systems and publisher-based learning content.

Working Environment

Normal office environment. Considerable flexibility is necessary to attend to student needs.
