Faculty-Master of Science Counselor Education

About the Role

Faculty members are responsible for providing students with a rich, relevant, and engaging academic experience in the Counseling Programs at Johnson and Wales University in Providence, RI. This position encompasses teaching graduate-level courses in the M.S. in Addiction Counseling and M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs, student advising, curriculum development, student outcomes assessment, and university service. Faculty are expected to maintain current expertise in their content area and engage in continuous professional development.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates specialized knowledge and maintains expertise in the theory, skills, and pedagogy of counseling.
• Uses effective strategies to support student learning and delivers current, relevant, and motivating course material.
• Assesses course objectives and instructional methods to improve teaching and learning through formative and summative assessments.
• Establishes advisor relationships to guide students on program choices, career possibilities, and educational growth.
• Supports the university’s outcomes initiatives by refining course assignments, evaluation tools, and participating in data analysis for program improvements.
• Facilitates development and revision of programs and courses to ensure alignment with program outcomes and university curriculum standards.
• Attends commencement, convocation, faculty meetings, department meetings, committee meetings, and professional development programs.
• Supports student enrollment and retention through university events, advising student clubs, and assisting with admissions activities.
• Adheres to faculty responsibilities as outlined in the faculty manual.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Earned doctorate in counselor education or a related field from a regionally accredited institution, preferably from a CACREP-accredited program.
• Counseling license in Rhode Island or ability to obtain such licensure upon hire.
• Demonstrated direct clinical counseling experience in addiction and clinical mental health counseling.
• Experience teaching at the university level, with preference for graduate-level teaching in Counselor Education or related disciplines.
• Ability to represent the M.S. in Addiction Counseling and M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs at internal and external events.

Preferred Qualifications

• Teaching experience at the graduate level.
• Work experience in marriage and family, couples counseling, school counseling, working with adolescents, or addiction and substance use disorders.
• Evidence of professional development, professional service, and advocacy in counseling.
• Evidence of research and scholarly activity in counseling commensurate with the faculty role.
• Memberships in professional counseling organizations.

College/university transcripts are required prior to hire. Qualified candidates must live or relocate within a daily commuting distance of the Providence Campus location upon hire.
