About the Role

Punahou School is seeking a Part-Time Temporary Japanese Language Faculty member for the Academy World Language Department. The department offers language choices including French, Hawaiian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish, and supports the school’s mission and ACTFL proficiency standards. The goals for students are to develop proficiency in an additional language and culture, foster positive global perspectives, and promote empathic, compassionate, and responsible global citizenship.

Schedule

This is a 9-month position for the 2026-2027 school year with a variable schedule, Monday–Friday, between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM. The role is part-time at 0.8 FTE.

Pay

Faculty salary range: $59,790 – $120,828, prorated based on actual FTE. Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Punahou School offers a comprehensive total rewards program, including competitive pay.

Responsibilities

• Teach Japanese language courses, integrating diverse aspects of language and culture, as well as technology, into instruction.
• Collaborate with colleagues to modify and develop curricular materials and assessments aligned with the school’s mission and ACTFL standards.
• Design and implement Integrated Performance Assessments (IPAs) and Oral Proficiency Interviews (OPIs).
• Conference regularly with students, contribute to curricular development, and participate in co-curricular activities such as advising student clubs.
• Use information competently in critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving.
• Communicate effectively in both English and Japanese in large and small group settings.
• Manage multiple tasks and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Engage in professional development opportunities to improve student learning and participate in Professional Learning Communities.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Japanese (Language), Linguistics, Culture, Literature, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• Three (3) years of experience teaching Japanese Language preferred.
• Advanced-level proficiency in Japanese across all skills (ACTFL Advanced High or beyond preferred).
• Strong knowledge of content-area curriculum, instructional methodologies, and current research on teaching and learning for adolescents.
• Proven leadership and classroom management skills.
• Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and an understanding of adolescent developmental needs.
• Proficiency in basic software applications and ability to integrate technology into teaching (experience with Canvas LMS and digital/electronic textbooks preferred).
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
