Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in Government at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs
  • Make continuous efforts to improve the quality of instruction by reviewing and utilizing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods
  • Develop and use a syllabus for each course or laboratory within college and departmental guidelines
  • Plan, develop and use a variety of teaching methods and materials that assist students in meeting course objectives and which are appropriate for students with differing educational and experiential backgrounds and learning styles
  • Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course objectives and inform them in a timely manner of their progress in the course
  • Submit required college reports and forms
  • Review, evaluate, and recommend student learning materials
  • Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues and the community
  • Provide access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication and other appropriate methods
  • Engage in professional development and institutional service as determined in consultation with the Dean
  • Have a negotiated workload that includes a requirement to mentor 10–15 students
  • Participate in one or more recruitment events including LSC-Houston North Academy, Open Houses, Career Exploration Days, and Zero Week
  • May participate in community-based events
  • Perform other reasonable, related duties as assigned

Physical Abilities

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

Work Schedule and Conditions

Equipment used includes a PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment. Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position. Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards. Class schedules will be offered in a blocked format and developed for the convenience of the students.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in political science/government; or Master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in political science/government; JDs and MPAs must have 18 graduate hours in related political science/government courses
