Fact-Checker / Disinformation Analyst (United States)

RemoteRemoteWriting$68k–$78k/yrContract

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify emerging trends and misinformation across platforms, including Facebook, X, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Reddit, prioritizing claims by reach, velocity, and potential for real-world harm.
  • Identify posts and stories that require fact-checking to address the spread of misinformation, and proactively write and edit clear, accurate fact-checks on a daily basis, publishing directly to social media as the primary, real-time channel, with selected fact-checks developed into fuller stories for the website.
  • Apply and continually update digital verification techniques, using a broad range of OSINT tools and exploring new methods as they emerge.
  • Audit AI-generated media, recognizing synthetic or manipulated content and incorporating AI tools responsibly into open-source verification work.
  • Create platform-optimized counter-content, including shareable fact-check graphics, short-form rebuttals, and social videos related to open-source journalism and verification and not just text.
  • Build and maintain the narrative-tracking database, cataloguing recurring narratives, their origins, and their spread as a research and accountability resource.
  • Conduct amplifier mapping, identifying the accounts, pages, and networks that originate and spread disinformation, while exercising sound editorial judgment about what is published.
  • Detect and assess synthetic and AI-generated media, including deepfakes, manipulated or miscaptioned video and imagery, and other altered content.
  • Manage the community tip line, triaging submissions from community members and turning credible flags into timely fact-checks.
  • Engage journalists and newsrooms, providing verified material, expert context, and guidance on responsible coverage of fearmongering and scapegoating campaigns.
  • Support partnerships and digital-literacy training with established fact-check organizations, community groups, and affected communities.
  • Stay continuously abreast of developments in current affairs, misinformation, and verification practice, tracking how false narratives travel online.
  • Uphold editorial and ethical standards, adhering to the guidelines that are consistent with International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) principles.

Qualifications and Skills

  • 2-5 years in fact-checking, social media newsgathering, investigative or verification journalism, OSINT/research, or a closely related field (strong portfolios from adjacent backgrounds will be considered).
  • Familiarity with misinformation targeting marginalized or vulnerable communities and the harms it causes in the American context.
  • Proven experience tracking disinformation and misinformation online, including the use of social listening and monitoring tools.
  • Extensive understanding of a range of OSINT techniques and experience using them in both daily and longer-term journalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to verify claims quickly and accurately under time pressure, with rigorous, transparent sourcing.
  • Strong understanding of synthetic and AI-generated media, including how to identify deepfakes, manipulated visuals, and altered content, as well as the use of AI tools in open-source verification.
  • Strong understanding of how disinformation, hate narratives, and coordinated campaigns operate online.
  • Excellent written English and the ability to translate complex findings into clear, persuasive public-facing copy.
  • Experience producing visual content (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar) and producing or contributing to social videos.
  • Sound editorial judgment and a commitment to accuracy, fairness, and non-partisanship.
  • Self-directed and able to build workflows independently in a founding role.
