About the role

Performs a variety of building and grounds maintenance activities in support of Town facilities. Work includes maintaining Town facilities, parks, buildings, and grounds through minor carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, and related repairs. Grounds activities involve turf maintenance, plant installation, mowing, pesticide application, and related tasks. The role requires public contact to address complaints, resolve problems, and handle service requests while adhering to safety methods to prevent injury.

Employee may be exposed to hazards including extreme weather, noise, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, and atmospheric conditions. Compliance with OSHA’s bloodborne pathogens standards may also be required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs landscape maintenance tasks such as turf management, plant installations, mowing, trimming, mulching, watering, fertilizing, and related activities.
  • Participates in parks maintenance, including lining ball fields and installing game equipment.
  • Inspects parks, playgrounds, and facilities for safety and records findings for liability purposes.
  • Performs semi-skilled maintenance work (carpentry, electrical, plumbing) to ensure operational procedures are followed.

Requirements

  • Considerable knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in parks, grounds, and facility maintenance and repair.
  • Considerable knowledge of work hazards and applicable safety standards in facility and parks maintenance.
  • Some knowledge of athletic field layout and preparation, horticultural design, and liability concerns related to parks and recreation services.
  • Some knowledge of cleaning chemicals and pesticide application.
  • Skill in operating equipment and tools used in the role.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to use chemicals and pesticides properly and in accordance with State regulations.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent and less than 2 years of experience in building construction, grounds, or facility maintenance.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the above.
