Facility Electrical System Engineer 2/3
About the role
The Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a skilled professional to join the Engineering Services (ES) Division as a Facility Electrical System Engineer. ES Division applies capabilities to enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. Within ES, the Science and Technology Operations (STO) Engineering Group is a multi-disciplinary organization consisting of collaborative System and Modification Engineering Teams. Collectively, these teams enable the STO Facility Operations Directorate (FOD) mission across nearly three million square feet of mixed-use office, laboratory, research, and production space.
Responsibilities
- Follow the LANL Conduct of Engineering (CoE) Program in support of facility modifications and facility configuration management
- Assess, maintain, and upgrade facility power distribution systems
- Lead the development and review of electrical engineering and designs for new and replacement equipment
- Interface and coordinate with other engineering disciplines and the customer(s) to establish design requirements, scope, schedule, and cost
- Qualify as Electrical Safety Officer and support work planning, hazard control, and abnormal event responses and investigation
- Evaluate complex electrical challenges, identify risks, and develop creative solutions
- Provide insights on electrical safety, power quality, system protection, and reliability improvements
- Lead technical discussions, mentor junior engineers, and drive process improvements
- Manage long-term operational and strategic planning for facility reinvestment and asset management
Requirements
- Technical Expertise: Combined experience related to the engineering, calculations, and design of facility electrical system, structures and components such as switchgear, switchboards, MCCs, motor starters / VFDs, Small UPS, panelboards, feeders, branch circuits, and short circuit analysis
- Codes, Standards, and Installation Experience: Experience in system and equipment installation and maintenance in accordance with National Codes and Standards such as IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NEC, and NFPA
- Project Management and Engineering Practices: Knowledge of engineering work planning, design change control and coordination
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication
Qualifications
- Education/Experience at Engineer 2: Position requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and a minimum three (3) years of practical experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.
- Education/Experience at Engineer 3: Position requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering and a minimum six (6) years practical experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.
Desired Qualifications
- Fundamentals of Engineer (FE) is desirable at the Engineer 2 level
- Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is desirable at the Engineer 3 level
- Demonstrated knowledge of DOE standards applicable to electrical design implementation
- Experience with SKM Powertools Software or similar electrical system analysis software
Pay
$106,400 - $176,000 for Engineer 2
$117,200 - $195,400 for Engineer 3
Schedule
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
