FACILITIES WORKER SUPERVISOR

Supervises a large group of skilled maintenance workers—electricians, plumbers, carpenters, and others—engaged in all phases of NEX construction, maintenance, and repair.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and directs subordinate facilities improvements workers in construction, repair, and maintenance of Navy Exchange and Navy Hospitality Group facilities and equipment, including:
    • Installing electrical wiring and repairing/replacing electrical equipment
    • Painting interior walls
    • Installing shelves and display cases
    • Performing carpentry work (e.g., building walls, modifying interiors, hanging doors, installing locksets)
    • Modifying, maintaining, and repairing utilities (e.g., water heaters, valves, pumps, supply/disposal systems)
    • Installing, altering, and repairing carpet
  • Establishes work schedules to ensure continuous productivity for the work crew.
  • Determines work priorities, monitors progress, and verifies compliance with procedures and methods.
  • Addresses workers’ questions regarding procedures, policies, and instructions.
  • Ensures deadlines are met and reports work status, delays, and operational issues to supervisors.
  • Coordinates projects with General Managers and local managers for stores and lodging.
  • Supervises and evaluates subordinates, including reviewing work assignments, conducting performance reviews, and approving leave requests.
  • Interviews and selects employees for job vacancies.
  • Assists with preparing drawings and sketches for proposed structural changes, electrical work, or equipment installation/relocation.
  • Estimates material and labor costs for Minor, Special, and Major projects.
  • Prepares daily worksheets documenting work assignments, hours spent, and materials used.
  • Prepares and processes purchase orders for materials, equipment, parts, and accessories.
  • Obtains supply items for electrical, carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, and painting work, including extracting item nomenclature from catalogs and contacting suppliers for pricing.
  • Maintains a listing of local vendors and manufacturers by merchandise type.
  • Reconciles credit card transactions and submits project expenses regularly to ensure budget compliance.
  • Conducts periodic inventory of facilities supplies and equipment, identifies discrepancies, and reports short or damaged items.
  • Accounts for all construction materials and equipment in stock.
  • Ensures compliance with safety and housekeeping rules, including proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.

Requirements

  • Required availability to travel up to 50% and work overtime.
  • Physical effort includes standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions.
  • Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors; indoor environments are typically adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated.
  • Exposure to noise from power tools, dust, dirt, fumes, and spray during repairs, painting, and tool operation.
  • Risk of injuries from lifting, using hand tools, or falls from ladders and scaffolds.

Qualifications

  • General Experience: One year of experience in general maintenance practices involving the upkeep of buildings, grounds, fixtures, and equipment. OR
  • Substitution of Education for Experience: One year of high school education may substitute for 3 months of general experience, up to a High School Diploma or GED substituting for one year of general experience.
  • Specialized Experience: Five years of full-performance maintenance work involving multiple trade practices, such as carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, and painting.

Full-Time (35+ hours per week)
