Facilities Technician I - Comparative Medicine

About the role

The Facilities Technician provides facility and operational support services for the Division of Comparative Medicine. This position has a wide range of responsibilities that include, but are not limited to, carpentry, painting, moving services, general maintenance, room/equipment decontamination, door repairs, equipment troubleshooting and repair. This position serves as a backup driver for animal relocation, ensuring timely and safe delivery as scheduled.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Perform minor facility repairs, including: Cart and transport equipment troubleshooting and repair.
  • Door adjustments and hardware repairs.
  • Maintenance plumbing repairs within non-licensed scope.
  • Painting and surface touch-ups.
  • Aid with room/equipment decontamination using VHP (Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide) system. Includes room preparation and operational support in accordance with DCM protocols.
  • Aid with hanging boards, shelving, wall fixtures and other items.
  • Aid with moving varied supplies, small office furniture, and research equipment.
  • Serve as backup driver for research animal transport and related materials in compliance with university and regulatory requirements. May be required to remain beyond scheduled shift hours to complete assigned transport schedules.
  • Utilize the MaintainX mobile work order system to: Receive and review assigned work orders. Document labor, materials, and task completion. Update work order status in real time. Close completed assignments accurately and timely. Respond to routine service requests during assigned shift. Report issues requiring licensed or specialized trades to supervisor.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and assigned vehicles in clean and ready condition.
  • Aid with inventory tracking and organization of supplies, tools, and materials as needed.
  • Support vendor/regulator visits, inspections and repairs.
  • Follow all safety, biosafety, and regulatory compliance requirements.

Education

  • Required Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent high school certification or combination of education and/or experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Maintenance operations experience in a medical research, manufacturing or animal care environment. Experience in troubleshooting and repairing small equipment, carts, or transport devices. Experience using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). Basic carpentry and general maintenance experience. Ability to meet WashU driver eligibility requirements. Basic mechanical aptitude and experience using hand and power tools. Ability to operate a smartphone and utilize mobile applications (MaintainX) to receive, document, update, and close work orders. Ability to lift, move, and transport materials and equipment in accordance with university safety guidelines. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently with minimal supervision.
