Position Summary

The Wisconsin Historical Society's Old World Wisconsin is a 600-acre outdoor living history museum located in Eagle, Wisconsin. This facility invites guests to explore homes, farms, and businesses from across Wisconsin, spanning from the 1840s to the 1930s. The museum focuses on hands-on experiences and immersive environments to inspire visitors and connect them with Wisconsin's past.

Duties

  • Perform basic carpentry tasks such as constructing, installing, repairing, and restoring wooden structures and components like porches, steps, railings, windows, boardwalks, fences, benches, and signage.
  • Paint fences, railings, picnic tables, and perform limited painting of historic and non-historic building interiors and exteriors.
  • Inspect roofs and perform minor repairs.
  • Perform minor preventative maintenance and repairs to electrical, plumbing, heating, and cooling systems, and well pumps. Tasks include replacing batteries, light bulbs, replacing door and gate hardware, and reporting issues with phone, Wi-Fi, or alarm systems.
  • Spray and remove wasp nests and bee hives, and inspect buildings for insect or animal intrusion and damage.
  • Assist delivery drivers and service providers to access secured locations, including pest control, phone, and security techs, fire, safety, and health inspectors.
  • Perform custodial duties as assigned. This includes cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, mopping and sweeping buildings, emptying trash and recycling containers, and stocking custodial supplies. Maintain the cleanliness of tables, chairs, and other event supplies.
  • Maintain motorized grounds-keeping equipment or schedule maintenance of this equipment by reputable repair facilities. Operate all power tools and equipment according to manufacturers' instructions and with all safety guards and equipment in place. Safely handle and store fuel for this equipment.

Salary Information

$17.00 per hour with a weekend differential of 80 cents per hour. This classification is in schedule and class 03-10. This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and limited to 1,039 hours. It is part-time and averages 20 hours per week. Wisconsin residency is required for LTE positions. LTE positions are not civil service classified and do not lead to permanent status. WHS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.

Qualifications

  • Excellent customer service and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to lift/carry objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Familiar with and able to safely use common carpentry and grounds keeping tools, as well as custodial supplies, equipment, and chemicals.
  • Self-starting and able to perform all duties in a swift and thorough manner to ensure the museum is clean, safe, and inviting for staff and guests.
  • Able to take direction and follow through with minimal supervision.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and safe driving record.
  • Able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
