About the role

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic supports the maintenance, repair, installation, and preventive care of campus HVAC and mechanical systems. This role ensures safe, reliable, and efficient building operations through hands-on maintenance, emergency response, and renovation support.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain HVAC equipment, plumbing systems, cooling towers, pumps, motors, and related mechanical components.

  • Respond to service requests and emergency calls by restoring air flow, temperature, humidity, and repairing utility distribution systems.

  • Perform routine component replacements, adjustments, and minor repairs to maintain system reliability.

  • Assist with HVAC renovations and equipment installations, including piping, ductwork, wiring, thermostats, and related systems.

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, testing, and troubleshooting to maximize equipment performance and minimize downtime.

  • Support HVAC system upgrades and maintenance projects under the direction of journey-level staff.

  • Assist journey-level trades personnel with maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction projects.

  • Maintain mechanical rooms, utility systems, and related equipment to support safe and efficient operations.

Qualifications

  • Experience analyzing and responding to emergency situations.

  • Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems, and renovations.

  • Ability to effectively communicate and successfully interact with a variety of individuals in a diverse environment at all levels of the organization.

  • Understanding and application of university and departmental policies and procedures.

  • Prior experience, within the previous three years, in a large multi-building facility operation performing maintenance and repair work.

  • Completion of training/coursework in HVAC, electrical theory, or mechanical equipment/systems preferred.

  • Journey-level skill in one trade and strong skills in other applicable trades.

Benefits

Full benefits package includes generous time off, retirement, health coverage, tuition fee waiver, and optional offerings such as flexcash, life and disability insurance, legal and pet plans. The position is benefits eligible and non-exempt under FLSA, eligible for overtime compensation.

Pay

Compensation range: $5,355 - $7,801 per month (Step 1 – Step 20). Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.

Schedule

Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
