Position Summary: The Huff Family Innovation Center, part of the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science, is hiring a Fabrication Shop Technician. This role supports class project work, student organization projects, prototypes, and general fabrication for students, staff, faculty, and community members. The position assists with design, maintenance, and training of equipment and laboratories, ensuring safe and effective operation of the center’s fabrication spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in oversight and maintenance of quality standards in the fabrication area.
  • Supervise student work groups and instruct students in proper, safe equipment use.
  • Maintain cleanliness and functionality of the shop area and equipment.
  • Assist with tool and shop machinery upkeep.
  • Participate in the development of training materials and processes.
  • Design, develop, fabricate, test, and maintain specialized instruments, components, and mechanical systems.
  • Analyze data and recommend protocol changes to align with strategic plans and unit objectives.
  • Assist with material and component selection based on physical properties, cost, and guidelines.
  • Maintain, repair, and operate complex or specialized instrumentation; identify damages and communicate repair needs.
  • Locate, position, and calibrate instrument parts and assemblies.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of various tool sets, including woodworking, metals, CNC machines, manual milling and lathe work, welding, composites fabrication, electronics fabrication, powder coating, or general prototyping.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring others.
  • Interest in learning new skills, toolsets, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate and engage with students, technical staff, faculty, and community members.
  • Basic computer skills, including MS Office.

Schedule

  • Full-time, benefit and paid time off eligible position.
  • May require evenings and weekends, with an hourly rate differential.

Pay

Starting wage of $23.00/hour, commensurate with skills and experience.
