Externship Coordinator – 3+ Years Medical Assisting Experience Required

About the role

The Medical Assisting Externship Coordinator supports student transitions from classroom instruction to hands-on training at externship sites, focusing on employment outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of the externship experience, including site development, student placement, compliance, documentation, and post-externship employment conversions.

  • Secure, maintain, and expand a network of externship sites, focusing on employers seeking to hire students post-externship.

  • Carefully coordinate timely student placements to ensure the externship begins concurrently with the start of the externship module.

  • Maintain detailed records and documentation in accordance with programmatic, accreditation, and regulatory requirements.

  • Educate and support site supervisors and students on externship policies, expectations, and procedures.

  • Provide exceptional student service through regular communication, troubleshooting concerns, and supporting retention and program completion.

  • Represent the program professionally with community partners and employers, participating in career fairs or other outreach events as needed.

Qualifications

  • A current active Medical Assistant license with at least 3 years of experience.

  • An associate’s degree or higher preferred; equivalent work experience in community outreach, workforce development, healthcare partnerships, or as a Medical Assistant will be considered.

  • At least 3 years of experience as a Medical Assistant, proficient in both front- and back-office operations.

  • At least 2 years of experience in project coordination, community engagement, and employer relations, with additional background in sales/marketing; career services experience strongly preferred.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.

  • Knowledge of or experience in the healthcare industry is a plus.

  • A valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the ability to travel regularly for site visits.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and comfort working within a data tracking system, Student Information System or CRM.

  • Familiarity with accreditation standards, externship program coordination, or student services is preferred.
