Experimental Nuclear Physics Postdoc
We are seeking two or more postdoctoral researchers to join the low-energy nuclear physics team (P-3) in LANL's Physics Division. The role focuses on direct and indirect measurements of neutron-induced reactions using advanced instruments at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE).
About the Role
The successful candidate will perform measurements, analysis, and/or development with the suite of instruments at LANSCE, including:
- Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments (DANCE)
- Low-Energy (n,Z) (LENZ) Instrument
- Chi-Nu Prompt Fission Neutron Instrument
- Correlated Gamma-Neutron Array for sCattering (CoGNAC)
- Spatially REsolved Fission Tracker and TPC (SREFT)
- SPecrometer for Ion DEtermination Research (SPIDER)
- Device for Indirect Capture Experiments on Radionuclides (DICER)
These instruments utilize unique time-of-flight neutron beams (sub-thermal to 800 MeV) produced via spallation. Opportunities include working on new capabilities like the Neutron Target Facility, Neutron Target Demonstrator, and ASTRA facility. Experimental campaigns may also be conducted at external accelerator facilities.
Research areas include nuclear astrophysics (s-process, r-process, heavy element synthesis), nuclear structure (gamma-ray spectroscopy, level density, photon strength function), nuclear reactions, and fission studies. The group collaborates closely with LANL’s Theory Division, nuclear physics/astrophysics theory groups, and rad-hydro modeling teams. Cross-disciplinary opportunities exist with nuclear engineers, radiochemists, and simulation development groups.
Highly qualified applicants may be considered for prestigious fellowships, including Director’s, Agnew National Security, Marie Curie, Richard P. Feynman, J. Robert Oppenheimer, or Frederick Reines Fellowships.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in nuclear physics, particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear engineering, or a related field (completed within the last five years or soon to be completed; exceptions considered).
- Ability to conduct independent and collaborative research.
- Strong technical and interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).
Desired Qualifications
While not required, any of the following skills are advantageous (note relevant experience in your cover letter):
- Particle or gamma-ray detector development/implementation.
- Monte Carlo-based particle/gamma-ray simulation tools.
- Nuclear reaction models.
- Detector electronic hardware or data acquisition design/development.
- Numerical methods or computational physics.
- UNIX/Linux operating systems or scripting languages (e.g., Python).
- Machine learning approaches.
Work Environment
The position is onsite in Los Alamos, NM. Work locations are at the discretion of management.
