WSP is seeking an Experienced Substation Designer for our Freeport, ME office to support our Power & Energy Substation Team. This role provides technical design and CADD support for planning, infrastructure, and technical services projects, focusing on electric utility transmission and distribution substation design, including physical and protection & control (P&C) design.
About the role
- Provide technical design and CADD support to produce designs and specifications for substation projects.
- Develop skills and generate CADD designs for projects of basic complexity.
- Create accurate and concise design-phase deliverables, including plans, details, models, schematics, specifications, and material lists.
- Ensure designs meet industry standards for quality, accuracy, and functionality.
- Collaborate with global experts in power delivery, generation, and program management.
Responsibilities
- Collect, compile, and analyze data from work sites, surveys, blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings to support drafting and design activities.
- Use 3D CADD software to resolve design details or discrepancies, ensuring high precision in drawings for projects of basic to moderate complexity.
- Follow standard practices for technical design assistance, including geometric dimensioning, tolerance, and quantity calculations.
- Verify accuracy of calculations, design changes, and contract interpretations; escalate discrepancies or technical problems for resolution.
- Work with cross-functional teams to execute project work and ensure plans adhere to city, state, and federal regulations.
- Prepare multiple design versions for engineer review and specify dimensions, materials, and procedures for assigned projects.
- Collaborate with engineers and technical professionals on project phases, checks, and tasks.
- Apply analytical techniques and software to solve moderately complex engineering issues or modify existing designs.
- Engage in occasional client and contractor communication to coordinate drafting and design support reviews.
- Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Requirements
- High School Diploma.
- 5-7 years of relevant post-education experience in drafting and design support.
- Highly familiar with drafting and design principles, practices, processes, methods, and techniques.
- Knowledge of relevant codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
- Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
- Developing analytical skills with the ability to evaluate information and apply sound judgment under supervision.
- Capable interpersonal and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to learn new techniques, manage multiple tasks, and follow instructions.
- Ability to work independently under general supervision and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, math principles, and spreadsheets.
- Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies.
- Flexibility to work extended schedules as required by project needs.
- Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree in a closely related discipline.
- Essential professional licensure or certification.
