Experienced Registered Nurse, Medical ICU, 36 hours, Nights

About the role

A Registered Nurse demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide expected standards of care based on physical, psychosocial, cultural, educational, spiritual, safety and age-appropriate considerations of patients. The Registered Nurse, in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of Massachusetts Rules & Regulations- 244 CMR 3.0, bears full and ultimate responsibility for the quality of nursing care provided to individuals and groups, including health maintenance, teaching, counseling, collaborative planning, and restoration of optimal functioning and comfort or dignified death.

The Registered Nurse assumes responsibility for the plan of care, has the authority to make decisions, and is held accountable for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The role facilitates coordination of care across the continuum and demonstrates safe practice within the domains of clinical judgment, professional relationships, clinical leadership, and clinical scholarship.

A responsibility and function of the Registered Nurse includes delegation and supervision in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of Massachusetts Rules & Regulations- 244 CMR 3.0 and the ANA Principles of Delegation. The delegating registered nurse bears full responsibility for appropriate assignment, teaching, directing, supervising, and the outcome of delegation.

The Registered Nurse provides care directly to patients and collaborates with other healthcare team members, maintains current knowledge and skill with technical procedures, complies with regulatory and accrediting body standards, and is licensed in Massachusetts.

Unit Summary

Lahey Clinic’s Critical Care Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) is a 12-bed acute care area where highly trained nurses care primarily for medical patients requiring ventilatory support and ECG monitoring. Patients may also require hemodynamic monitoring, intracranial pressure monitoring, and/or CVVH. The MICU patient population includes patients receiving TPA for stroke and those with hepatic-renal failure. Nurses work closely with the pulmonary team to maintain critical care skills and provide a supportive atmosphere for patients and families. Patient population ranges from young adult to geriatric, and services may include Pulmonary/Critical Care, Cardiac, Neurology, Infectious Disease, GI/Liver transplant, Nephrology, and Hematology.

Responsibilities

• Clinical Judgment and Decision Making: Assess patient and family needs, develop a culturally competent plan of care, perform systematic assessments, deliver age-specific care, evaluate effectiveness, and adapt the plan based on patient/family response. Coordinate safe, high-quality care for assigned patients.
• Professional Relationship: Establish professional relationships with nurses, physicians, colleagues, patients, and families based on Swanson’s Theory of Caring. Educate patients and families about illness, treatment, and preventative measures. Support community-based activities and demonstrate positive, effective communication.
• Clinical Leadership: Support the development of others using Benner’s Novice to Expert model. Demonstrate professional behavior, adherence to policies, and responsiveness as a team member. Fulfill roles in regulatory compliance, teaching, and quality improvement.
• Clinical Scholarship: Achieve clinical scholarship through patient experiences, collaboration, and formal education. Uphold quality nursing care standards, commit to lifelong learning, and apply evidence-based practice.

Requirements

• Graduate of a state-approved and/or accredited School of Nursing.
• Current license to practice professional nursing from the Massachusetts Board of Registration.
• BLS certification from the American Heart Association.
• At least one full year of experience as a practicing Registered Nurse in an acute or sub-acute care setting.
• Demonstrated clinical skills and technical knowledge to provide care according to Nursing Policy and Procedures and unit-specific competencies.
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.

Schedule

36 hours per week. Nights (7P-7A) with a commitment to every third weekend and holiday rotation.

Pay

The pay range for this position is $37.00 - $95.37 per hour. Actual compensation is determined based on factors such as seniority, education, training, relevant experience, certifications, geography, job responsibilities, shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime, and other applicable pay practices.
