About the Role

The Clinical Staff Nurse (CSN) functions as a champion of quality patient care and professional caregiver, demonstrating critical thinking skills and scientific judgment in planning and delivering patient care. The CSN performs at a competent level of nursing, consistently applying the nursing process—assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, coordination of care, teaching, health promotion, and evaluation. The role upholds the highest standards of professional performance, including ethics, cultural diversity, communication, collaboration, evidence-based practice, nursing research, quality, resource utilization, and environmental health.

The CSN operates within the JHS CARE Model, ensuring accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. Clinical knowledge and skills must meet the standards required by specific clinical areas.

Responsibilities

• Implements and coordinates the delivery of care in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare providers.
• Applies the nursing process (assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation) in delivering nursing knowledge.
• Documents all pertinent information regarding nursing care, care plans, and observations.
• Accounts for narcotics and emergency equipment during each shift.
• Maintains a working knowledge of facility infection control procedures.
• Recognizes, questions, and reports significant patient findings or inconsistencies in medical/nursing orders or treatment regimens; collaborates to seek corrective action.
• Selects, individualizes, updates, and adheres to clinical procedures, protocols, standards, clinical pathways, care plans, narcotics policies, and discharge/teaching plans.
• Completes and submits patient/unit charges.
• Recognizes and prioritizes unit needs/problems, implementing corrective action independently.
• Assumes the charge nurse role when assigned, supervising designated personnel and taking action as needed.
• Applies logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, and approaches to problems.
• Provides functional direction and assistance to LPNs, CNAs, MAs, and completes new staff orientation as assigned.
• Conducts timely rounds to ensure continuity of care.
• Maintains HIPAA compliance at all times.
• Follows and performs all related unit-specific policies and procedures as detailed on the unit-specific competency checklist.
• Utilizes job and unit-specific equipment as required.
• Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Expertise).
• Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Valid Florida RN license.
• American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with at least 6 months validity.
• AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification (unit-specific requirement).
• Must meet and maintain all unit-specific and organizational skills, competencies, certifications, and licensures as required by regulatory and nursing standards of practice.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in Nursing is required; BSN degree is preferred.
• For employees performing Point of Care testing in the Operating Room, Neuro ICU, NICU, PICU, Pedi-ER, Cath Lab, and/or Interventional Radiology, the educational degree must be verified at the time of hire (minimum Associate’s degree).
• Generally requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements

• Extended standing or walking.
• Ability to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds.
• Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices.
• Frequent visual acuity required for activities such as extended computer use.

• Fast-paced environment with occasional high-pressure or emergent and stressful situations.
