About the role
DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Hospital is seeking an Exotics Veterinarian to join our team. This position offers the opportunity to work in a high-acuity environment with a diverse caseload of exotic species.
Responsibilities
- Provide emergency, urgent, and scheduled care for exotic species.
- Perform triage, diagnostics, medical management, and treatment planning for a diverse exotic caseload.
- Manage challenging and rewarding cases while working alongside veterinary technicians, specialists, interns, and residents.
- Develop individualized diagnostic and treatment plans and communicate clearly with clients about their pets' care.
- Collaborate with other specialty services and our emergency and critical care teams to provide comprehensive patient care.
- Support patient transfers and coordinate care with referring veterinarians when appropriate.
- Teach and mentor interns, residents, externs, and early-career veterinarians.
- Present case rounds and share expertise in exotic animal medicine throughout the year.
- Participate in hospital committees and other opportunities that support the DoveLewis community.
- Build relationships with referring veterinarians and represent DoveLewis within the veterinary community and the public.
- Continue developing your skills through continuing education and professional development.
Requirements
- A DVM/VMD or equivalent degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school, or ECFVG certification.
- Current or eligible Oregon veterinary licensure.
- Experience practicing exotic animal medicine, including small exotic companion mammals, birds such as parrots and backyard poultry, reptiles, and wildlife.
- Strong diagnostic, clinical reasoning, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- An interest in teaching and mentoring other members of the veterinary team.
- The ability to thrive in a fast-paced emergency, critical care, and specialty environment.
- A compassionate approach to patient care, animal welfare, and client communication.
- Completion of an internship or advanced training in exotic pet medicine, wildlife, or zoological medicine is preferred.
- Emergency, critical care, or specialty veterinary experience is also a plus.
