Position Summary

The person chosen for this position will integrate faith and learning in the classroom while contributing to a collaborative, Christ-centered academic community committed to the mission to “educate students to become servants of Christ to make a difference in today’s world.” The role emphasizes excellence in teaching and provides opportunities for scholarship and service, with particular attention to meaningful student engagement in small class settings where faculty can know students well and invest in their intellectual, physical, professional, and spiritual formation. Faculty should possess a strong academic and professional background, a commitment to a Biblical worldview, and a desire to work alongside colleagues in a collegial and supportive faculty environment. This position is primarily focused on teaching Exercise and Health Science. The successful candidate will bring disciplinary expertise to undergraduate courses in exercise science, health science, fitness and wellness, kinesiology, physical education, first aid/CPR, or related areas while also supporting the broader instructional and programmatic needs of the Exercise and Health Science Department.

About the Role

This position provides the opportunity to shape course design, influence program direction, and participate in substantive curricular conversations that directly affect student learning and outcomes. Faculty will engage in departmental, college, professional, and community initiatives as appropriate and will play a meaningful role in guiding students’ academic paths, professional development, and vocational direction.

Responsibilities

  • Teach a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester, including Exercise and Health Science, fitness and wellness, kinesiology, physical education, first aid/CPR, and related courses as needed; provide timely feedback and grades to students; and collaborate with the department chair in shaping course offerings and scheduling.
  • Design and deliver engaging course plans, syllabi, assignments, laboratory experiences, activity-based instruction, and instructional materials that reflect disciplinary rigor, current professional practice, and faith integration.
  • Serve students through academic advising, recruitment, and retention, with an emphasis on building meaningful faculty–student relationships that extend beyond the classroom.
  • Guide students in academic planning, career exploration, graduate or professional school preparation, internships, certifications, and vocational discernment.
  • Maintain weekly office hours as a structured opportunity for mentorship, academic coaching, and personalized instruction.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and refine curriculum, contributing to continuous program improvement, assessment, and innovation.
  • Assist with the maintenance, organization, and appropriate use of instructional facilities, laboratories, exercise equipment, and other departmental resources as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with community organizations, healthcare providers, fitness and wellness organizations, schools, and other potential partners.
  • Participate in faculty committee service as a meaningful avenue to influence institutional direction, strengthen academic programs, and contribute to shared governance.
  • Maintain appropriate scholarly, professional-development, certification, and service activities consistent with the expectations of the College and the faculty member’s promotion track.
  • Support the mission of the College through service on committees and through additional departmental, institutional, church, professional, and community initiatives that extend the College’s impact.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a master’s degree with 18 or more hours of graduate coursework in Exercise Science, Health Science, Kinesiology, Physical Education, Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, or a related degree; terminal degree preferred.
  • Previous college teaching experience preferred.
  • Professional experience in exercise science, health promotion, wellness, fitness, athletic training, physical education, coaching, rehabilitation, or related professional practice preferred.
  • Certified CPR Instructor preferred.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and current developments in Exercise and Health Science and related professional practice.
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies and techniques appropriate to classroom, laboratory, fitness, and activity-based courses.
  • Ability to create syllabi and effectively deliver and assess course learning objectives.
  • Ability to advise, instruct, manage, motivate, mentor, and evaluate students.
  • Ability to supervise students safely and effectively in laboratory, fitness, wellness, and activity-based instructional settings.
  • Ability to learn relevant functions of BrightSpace, Bryan College’s online learning management system.
  • Ability to effectively and appropriately integrate technology into the teaching and learning process.
  • Ability to interact professionally and successfully with students, colleagues, educational institution representatives, healthcare and fitness professionals, community partners, and the general public.
