About the role
We are seeking an exceptional and visionary Executive Vice President of Engineering to lead our organization’s engineering efforts. This role is for a builder, a visionary, and an operator who can lead at the highest levels of strategic thinking while remaining connected to the technical realities of delivering complex engineering programs.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the senior-most technical authority across all engineering disciplines including civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and project controls; define and enforce firm-wide engineering standards, quality benchmarks, and technical excellence frameworks.
- Partner with the CEO and executive leadership team to define the long-term engineering strategy, organizational structure, and capability roadmap; set the vision for how the engineering practice will grow, evolve, and differentiate in the marketplace over a 3–5 year horizon.
- Recruit, develop, and retain a world-class engineering leadership team including Engineering Directors, Principal Engineers, and Practice Leads across all disciplines; establish clear organizational structures, career pathways, and leadership pipelines to scale the engineering organization sustainably.
- Provide executive-level oversight across the entire engineering project portfolio; ensure consistent on-time, on-budget, and high-quality delivery across all simultaneous programs and client engagements; establish portfolio-level governance frameworks and escalation protocols.
- Partner with the Chief Revenue Officer and Business Development leadership to drive engineering-led revenue growth; lead pursuits for marquee clients and strategic accounts; serve as the executive sponsor for key client relationships and act as the senior technical voice in major proposals, presentations, and contract negotiations.
- Work closely with the CEO, CFO, COO, and other C-suite leaders to align engineering strategy with overall business objectives; collaborate with HR, Finance, and Operations to ensure the engineering organization is properly resourced, structured, and positioned for growth.
- Champion the adoption and integration of emerging technologies across the engineering practice including BIM, digital twins, AI-assisted design, cloud-based collaboration platforms, and advanced analytics; establish an innovation culture that continuously seeks to improve engineering efficiency, quality, and competitiveness.
- Establish and maintain firm-wide engineering governance frameworks; ensure all engineering deliverables meet or exceed applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements; own enterprise-level technical risk management and quality assurance across the full project portfolio.
- Cultivate an inclusive, high-performance, and growth-oriented engineering culture across a fully distributed, multi-discipline workforce; champion diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within the engineering organization; invest deeply in talent development, mentorship, and succession planning at all levels.
- Own the engineering practice P&L at the enterprise level; manage multi-million dollar budgets, staffing plans, utilization targets, and profitability goals in partnership with the CFO and Finance leadership; drive operational efficiency and margin improvement across the engineering business unit.
- Prepare and present engineering strategy, portfolio performance, and organizational health updates to the Board of Directors, investors, and executive leadership; represent the engineering organization at the highest levels of corporate governance.
Requirements
- Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering or a closely related field; Master's degree in Engineering, Business Administration (MBA), or a related discipline strongly preferred.
- Experience: 20+ years of progressive engineering experience with a minimum of 10 years in senior engineering leadership roles (Director, VP, SVP, or equivalent) overseeing large, multi-discipline engineering organizations and complex capital project portfolios.
- PE License: Active Professional Engineering (PE) license required; SE licensure or additional discipline-specific credentials are a strong advantage.
- Technical Breadth: Demonstrated technical expertise spanning multiple engineering disciplines; ability to provide credible technical leadership and strategic direction across civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and project controls functions.
- Executive Leadership: Proven track record of building, scaling, and leading high-performing engineering organizations of 50+ engineers across multiple disciplines, geographies, and delivery models in a consulting, EPC, or services environment.
- P&L Ownership: Demonstrated experience owning and managing large-scale engineering practice P&L with full accountability for revenue, margin, utilization, and growth targets in a professional services or consulting environment.
- Business Development: Extensive experience leading business development at the executive level including strategic account management, major proposal leadership, client relationship development, and contract negotiation for large-scale engineering programs.
- Bonus Points: Advanced Credentials: PE licensure in multiple states, SE licensure, MBA, PMP, or other advanced professional credentials that demonstrate breadth of expertise and leadership capability.
- M&A Experience: Experience leading or supporting engineering practice acquisitions, mergers, joint ventures, or greenfield team buildouts in a professional services or consulting environment.
- Federal & Defense: Experience leading engineering programs on large federally funded or defense-related projects with EVMS compliance, FAR/DFARS requirements, and multi-agency stakeholder management.
- International Experience: Experience leading engineering programs across multiple countries and regulatory jurisdictions; familiarity with international project delivery standards (FIDIC, ISO) and global talent management.
- Digital Transformation: Demonstrated track record of leading enterprise-wide digital transformation initiatives within an engineering organization including BIM adoption, cloud migration, AI integration, and data analytics platforms.
- Sustainability & ESG: Experience developing and leading firm-wide sustainability, resilience, and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) strategies within an engineering practice.
- Venture & Innovation: Experience engaging with venture capital, corporate innovation programs, or engineering technology startups to identify and integrate emerging technologies into engineering practice delivery.
- Public Speaking & Thought Leadership: Established presence as an industry thought leader through conference speaking, published research, industry board participation, or professional organization leadership (ASCE, NSPE, ENR).
