About the role

Our clients—General Counsel, Chief Legal Officers, or the senior-most individuals responsible for Legal functions—along with adjacent areas such as compliance, audit, and enterprise risk management, face challenges keeping pace with change within the Legal function and their organizations. As companies focus on digital dexterity, shifting business models, and evolving customer and workforce expectations, Gartner for General Counsel (GC) clients, supported by their Executive Partner, more adeptly assess needed changes, manage legal and related risks, achieve goals more quickly, and operate with higher assurance of success.

As an Executive Partner, you will deliver solutions for the most critical legal, governance, and risk management challenges facing companies across all industries. Your role is highly dynamic: one day you may support the development of a legal department strategy and long-term vision, while another you may advise on legal department workload, metrics, budgets, legal operations team growth, talent management, or restructuring compliance, privacy, enterprise risk, or other programs. Clients will also seek your guidance on working with the Board, CEO, and management teams on critical business goals, risks, governance, oversight, and emerging enterprise risks. Key priorities include third-party risk management, cyber and information governance, legal technology and AI adoption, and effective reporting and disclosure processes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide executive advisory services to GC members across all industries and business models.
  • Synthesize Gartner insights and data to deliver world-class advisory support through bi-weekly client engagements and periodic working sessions, adapting materials independently for client use.
  • Host, facilitate, and participate in member activities, including strategy working sessions, peer roundtables, client meetings at annual conferences, and virtual webinars (delivered virtually or on-site).
  • Define and deliver innovative solutions by assessing member needs and developing customized value plans aligned with Executive Program strategy and product deliverables.
  • Facilitate member interaction and peer collaboration through the Gartner for GC member community portal and assisted connections.
  • Collaborate with Gartner teams, including Client Support Professionals and Account Executives, to serve members throughout the lifecycle: pre-sale, on-boarding, relationship management, delivery, review, and renewal.
  • Partner with Research Analysts to identify gaps in materials relevant and valuable to members (though content creation is not a primary responsibility).
  • Drive member retention and contribute to account growth by supporting Gartner Sales Associates, including:
    • Helping sales teams understand the value of Guided vs. Self-Directed products.
    • Building sales confidence and ability to engage and sell to C-suite prospects.
    • Creating Value Stories to bring the service to life.
    • Partnering on account planning, development, and proof-of-concept (POC) engagements with prospective clients.

Requirements

  • Accomplished Corporate General Counsel with experience working with the C-suite, Board of Directors, and stakeholders, driving change at all levels.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience as a GC (or top Legal role) and 15+ years in Corporate Legal environments.
  • Experience as GC of public organizations with at least $1B in annual revenue.
  • In-depth understanding of the Legal function and adjacent areas (e.g., Compliance, Audit, Risk).
  • Ideally, a background across multiple industries to support diverse member organizations.
  • Law firm experience, including client relationship management and revenue generation, is highly beneficial.
  • Technologically savvy; proficient in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word) to adapt and draft client-ready materials.
  • Consulting background is a plus.

Skills

  • Critical thinker and problem solver, able to assess client situations and provide actionable, outcome-based advice while leveraging Gartner resources.
  • Ability to build strategic internal partnerships and positively impact change.
  • High executive presence with the ability to quickly build trust and deliver value in client-facing roles.
  • Superior verbal and written communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.
