About the Role
The Executive Director of Market Impact serves as the market leader, providing overall management, planning, execution, and leadership for all aspects of a designated market. This includes creating mission impact, mobilizing supporters, growing a diversified revenue portfolio, donor stewardship, board and staff development, and maintaining overall budgets. The Executive Director will also maintain a donor portfolio and position March of Dimes as a leader in maternal and child health care in their respective market. This role involves establishing effective partnerships with corporations, foundations, community leaders, government officials, and other nonprofits.
The Executive Director reports to the Associate Vice President of Market Impact and leads a team of local donor relationship, mission, and enterprise shared services staff to drive results.
Responsibilities
Mission Leadership and Impact
- Lead, develop, and implement a results-based local strategic planning process that places mission impact at the forefront of all work.
- Advance maternal and infant health equity by identifying measurable strategies and solutions that address community mission needs and contribute to diversified revenue growth.
- Translate mission and advocacy in a manner that demonstrates impact and identifies supporter philanthropic interests.
- Leverage mission impact opportunities to engage supporters and drive expansion/implementation of mission programs for revenue growth and measurable impact.
- Demonstrate adaptive leadership to establish March of Dimes as a recognized and valued leader in maternal and infant healthcare.
- Identify, recruit, and retain influential state-level volunteer leaders and coach them to propel mission impact priorities.
- Lead mission impact staff to collaborate with fundraising staff and volunteers, providing education on using data to drive mission deliverables, advocacy initiatives, and revenue growth.
- Create a revenue pipeline and funding to support both new and existing mission initiatives (e.g., NFS, SPC).
Diversified Revenue Portfolio
- Lead, develop, and implement a results-based local strategic planning process that emphasizes a diversified revenue portfolio.
- Ensure each market employee maintains and grows a donor revenue portfolio by developing donor relationships, identifying philanthropic interests, and moving donors through the donor continuum to retain and increase giving.
- Ensure applicable market employees develop, maintain, and manage a pipeline of qualified individual gift donors, focusing on major gifts and planned giving.
- Achieve corporate engagement revenue goals by identifying appropriate corporate partners and developing alliances that drive mission impact and mobilize supporters.
- Ensure applicable market employees achieve Mission Investment Opportunities product revenue goals.
- Develop, maintain, and grow an individual donor portfolio to contribute to diversified revenue growth in individual giving, major gifts, corporate engagement, and Mission Investment Opportunities.
- Collaborate with national business partners to leverage local relationships with potential for national partnerships.
- Ensure CRM data integrity by setting goals, monitoring use, and utilizing data and reporting to further business.
- Stay current on donor needs, market trends, and competitor actions to create reliable revenue forecasts and identify donor development opportunities.
Strategic Planning and Budgeting
- Develop a comprehensive, results-based strategic plan incorporating impact, movement, growth, and performance.
- Ensure execution of the local strategic plan to achieve proven impact and exceed market targets for productivity and profitability.
- Develop revenue projections and provide financial analysis.
- Oversee budget development to increase net profitability and productivity according to national standards.
- Review and manage the strategic plan with staff on an ongoing basis, with a minimum of quarterly market reviews.
- Ensure market staff fully comprehend the strategic plan and their responsibilities for executing strategies to achieve success.
Volunteer Leadership
- Lead, develop, and implement a results-based local strategic planning process to identify, engage, and maintain influential volunteer leaders and board members to drive impact and secure revenue.
- Build a pipeline to constantly recruit new high-level volunteer leaders and board members.
- Ensure ongoing training and orientation of all volunteers in alignment with the local and national strategic plan.
- Collaborate with Volunteer Leadership Development to implement market board excellence and use relevant tools/resources (e.g., standards of excellence with fundraising committees).
- Recruit, activate, and retain influential, financially strong, and diverse volunteer leadership and market board members to result in revenue growth and market impact.
- Engage volunteer leaders to build a community of mission advocates.
Staff Development
- Hire and develop a diverse market staff passionate about the mission, with the skills, fit, and proven success to exceed expected goals.
- Establish and discuss individual goals and accountabilities for performance and behavior (at the beginning of the year) that align with organizational goals and include benchmarks and measurable milestones.
- Hold staff accountable to market and individual net productivity and profitability goals using reports and measurement tools, and provide constructive feedback to improve performance (at minimum quarterly, ideally weekly).
- Provide coaching and professional development to result in skill and behavioral growth, staff retention, and career pathing.
- Write and deliver annual performance reviews in a timely manner aligned with HR standards.
- Create a productive, professional, respectful, and culturally diverse work environment where all staff can be their best selves.
Requirements
- 4-year college degree or equivalent experience.
- Experience managing multiple staff across various functional areas, including remote employees.
- Experience in a nonprofit environment (preferred).
- Detail-oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to motivate staff and lead change.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Proven track record building internal and external relationships.
