Examiner Physician Assistant
As an Examiner, you will conduct Compensation & Pension (C&P) Examinations for Veterans applying for disability compensation from the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) in relation to their in-service injury claims. The role involves reviewing the claim, performing focused assessments of claimed injuries, reviewing medical records, and potentially rendering a medical opinion based on the record review and completed C&P exam. Charting from home may be required. Each examiner plays a vital role in the overall experience of the Veteran by providing an exceptional experience during these examinations, positively impacting their access to benefits and continuity of care.
About the role
Clinical Examiners will be guided through a web-based examination form in a proprietary online system to capture patient information. This position does not involve prescribing or treatment planning. Qualified candidates must hold an active license, work independently and collaboratively, demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, and adapt to changing situations. Basic computer skills are required.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive medical disability examinations, including reviewing medical history, performing physical exams, and assessing the impact of disabilities on daily life and functional abilities.
- Review and analyze medical records, diagnostic test results, and other pertinent documentation to understand the Veteran's medical history and health condition.
- Render objective, evidence-based medical opinions regarding the extent of health issues and their impact on the Veteran’s ability to work and carry out daily activities.
- Work within a case management system to organize workload, submit examination findings, and correspond with the Quality Assurance Team.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals, specialists, and experts to obtain additional medical information for thorough evaluations.
- Document examination findings, medical opinions, and recommendations in clear, concise reports following VA guidelines and contractual obligations.
- Partner with Loyal Source departments to access resources, meet deadlines, and ensure optimal performance.
- Manage time effectively, confirm availability, and schedule all Compensation and Pension (C&P) exams.
- Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and standards related to disability examinations, maintaining accuracy, fairness, and quality.
- Collaborate with the QA team to submit thorough and accurate examination findings.
- Maintain compliance with all VA training requirements and stay updated on VA MDE program requirements.
- Safeguard the confidentiality of all patient information in accordance with HIPAA and other privacy protocols.
Requirements
- Graduated from an accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Valid and unrestricted Physician Assistant license in any of the 50 States, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory or possession.
- At least 1 year of experience working as a Physician Assistant.
- Basic Life Support certification (including renewals).
- Previous experience in conducting medical disability examinations or a related field is preferred.
- Previous military experience or familiarity with the military or veteran communities is preferred.
- Completion of specialized training or continuing education in Medical Disability Evaluations, occupational health, or related areas is advantageous.
- Demonstrated proficiency in conducting comprehensive medical assessments, interpreting diagnostic tests, and formulating evidence-based medical opinions.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to interpret complex medical information and reach objective conclusions.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex medical concepts clearly.
- Unwavering commitment to ethical standards, objectivity, and fairness in disability evaluations.
- Detail-oriented mindset with a focus on accuracy and data quality.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

- Authorized to work in the United States and maintain any guidelines or requirements specific for federal contractors.
Skills
- Competent in the use of MS Word, MS Outlook, Adobe PDF, web-based platforms, and electronic medical records systems.
- Familiarity with Teams and web-based instructional/learning management systems is preferred.
- Empathy and compassion with a patient-centered approach.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions and handle problems involving a few variables.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of standing and sitting at a desk while working on a computer.
- Ability to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to see, hear, smell, bend, stretch, and engage in full range of motion to safely conduct comprehensive physical examinations.
Travel Requirements
10% travel required to support other clinics. Additional travel may be required for training or company events.
Pay
$64.69 per hour. Base pay plus monthly incentive totals $149,572–$179,572 a year.
Schedule
Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM. Clinics are closed on holidays.
